Buyback due to paint issues?

Has anyone had a successful buyback due to paint issues? My blue crush limited hybrid max has 350 miles on it, never seen a dirt road and has so many paint chips everywhere. Hundreds of chips. I contacted the dealer but was curious.

I saw a blue crush at my 15k checkup, I’ve never seen orange peel so bad! Even from 10-15 feet away it was horrible! I can’t believe it passed inspection! Is there a different pant process for blue crush??

Sorry, I'm not trying to be rude but people like to throw the "claim lemon law" a lot without understanding what that means. It's not a law that protects against any automotive issue. Typically, you can't just claim it falls under the lemon law after 350 miles with no prior repairs. I don't know Oregon lemon law details but, generally speaking, there needs to be a reasonable number of repair attempts before the lemon law is even considered. And in some states, it also requires a "substantial defect" that impairs the vehicle's use or safety, which this is not.

This very well may be a manufacturing defect but it will be extremely difficult to prove it qualifies for the lemon law.

So is the Terra paint on my truck. It is strange that 4th gen paint quality varies so much, with some colors being worse than others.

The only paint issue I've had with my black SR5 was a pretty deep scratch in the front left fender that we found when doing the walkaround with the salesman. They scheduled me in a week later and repainted the fender at no charge.

Makes me wonder about warranty times on paint… mine is Supersonic Red and has gathered a fair number of chips. I bought touch-up which should have been included. A couple of chips are to the metal. Hmmm.

My white 24 trail hunter has paint issues noticable all over the doors and front bumper and the dealer and factory finally solved my fuel door issue after 11,000 miles.

Yep - most lemon laws require that the problem is not resolved after three repair attempts or that the vehicle is out of service for more than 30 days.

Most states require the vehicle's use, value, or safety to be significantly affected. You will have to lean hard on the value of your truck has declined due to the paint chips in this case. You will also need to have it in service for 30+ days. At least the state I'm in, this didn't need to be consecutive. Just the total number of days it's in service must be greater than 30 days. So if they take their sweet time getting it repainted once you drop the keys off, good, let them! Also if you notice any imperfections, good, let them repaint it and that will also increase your days in service. I believe even normal warranty concerns will also add to this count, so if you have a faulty wireless charger for example, let that be a completely separate trip and leave it there for a day to add another day for days in service. In Florida, it does not have to be all for one issue fyi.

I recommend focusing on verbiage, like how the the deterioration of the paint surface is indicative of suboptimal paint quality and poor paint-application prep, which is not providing adequate durability and adhesion under normal operating conditions.


I'm not proud of it, but I have successfully completed 2 lemon law buy backs in 2024. Vehicles are of cheaper quality but much more money these days... it's a shame.

Also Toyota gave me a $1500 reimbursement when I accepted the buy back offer, as long as I bought another Toyota.
