Even with the captive audience in Alaska, 13K markup only builds resentment against the dealer for obvious price gouging. Unless ownership is complicit they should step in.

No discounts in Maine so far. One dealer I'm working with in Vermont is discounting, and I've seen others advertising. The dealer I'm working with in Maine is the largest in the state and has at least 40 non-hybrids allotted. The same goes for some other dealers up north.

I've mentioned before that discounts are a local market-based decision; you do not see Toyota offering any incentives to move Tacomas. I wouldn't expect to see Toyota incentives, if any, until the slow season in December/January.

Of course, this doesn't apply to me since I'm waiting on a hybrid.

I just closed a deal for $1700 under MSRP. I think it helped to point out their invoice price and the fact I was a repeat customer.

Local dealer has $1999 premium charge plus unwanted extras. Seattle dealers offer $2,500 discount. Do the math, drive 60 miles. Their loss.

I live in Vegas and we have 4 Toyota dealerships here. I am working mostly with one to which I have a deal worked out. I almost purchased a TRD OR Premium 54k OTD but we couldn't agree on my trade in value. After the fact we kept in contact and I mentioned we're going to keep the vehicle but the truck sold to which she said, "so all we have to do is agree on the price of the truck now? Would you have purchased it if we asked 52k?"
Uh obviously yes. She said I wish I would have knew that we could have made that deal!

Anyway, we agreed on 54k OTD but I may still get 52k OTD. The reason I still haven't pulled the trigger is only because I'm waiting for Solar Octane or Bronze Oxide.

Another dealer in Vegas I'm working with seem to be pretty good people. The 3rd is a typical dealership I'm not enthusiastic to work with and the 4th is adding 4-5k markups.

Point is the deals are out there. If dealerships want to eat they'll have to start making deals. The early adopter youtubers are drying up and the average Joe isn't paying markup.
Googling Toyota lately isn't coming up with good news for them. Scandal after scandal lately and their lack of vehicles hitting the lot spinning it as though they can't keep the cars on the lot (when they can't get cars on their lot), Toyota not used to looking this bad. Something will shake down to the consumers.

but...you paid MSRP...so who actually won?
I guess we both did. There's no way they were gonna let that truck go less than MSRP.
It wasn't many years ago when you could expect to get a vehicle for 20% under MSRP but those days are long gone. These guys are making a killing now.

Hopes raised and dashed in one day. I finally found an SR5 Xtracab in Salt Lake. (It’s only a 3000 mile drive home)

I went to the dealer website. Problem one: No options except mud guards and floor mats. Problem two: An 8k dealer markup.

Really? $50,000 for a stripped down Xtracab? I’m starting to wonder how these Toyota dealers sleep at night?

I called all the Toyota dealerships in my tri state area to see would work a deal below msrp. I just straight up asked for 7% off msrp. Some would work with others had wish lists and some with markups the next sucker will pay. My local dealer had to switch salesman after the first women tried to stonewall and upsale what was on lot the sales manger brought out the rookie sales kid and that dude basically did the deal through bosses. People are lazy or feel shamed to haggle or ask for discount. I even asked for discount on the extended warranty to close the deal. I was told oh the 6 speed is so rare and other bullshit but with Toyota smart path you can see the dealerships allotment so they can’t pretend yo know what is there what is on the way and what is being built. Be diligent asked to speak to sales manager and those salesman can’t win them all the sales manager know some people do there research know how a dealership works and will not just look at price and go where do I sign. They have to move units even below msrp to a hardball mouth piece from time to time.
