My old man passed away in 2011 just before I retired from the Military. Would have loved him to be there for my ceremony. He served 20 years as well, including Vietnam. Unfortunately life took him early. His Uncle who raised him served during WWII and was shot down behind enemy lines. He was a POW. Raising him when his dad passed.

One of the fondest memories I have of him was when he took me with him one week during work. He was an independent truck driver. He always left on Sunday afternoon and came home Friday night. I always helped him with maintenance on the truck and trailer Saturday, sometimes Sunday as well if we did finish it at all.

By trade before joining the Navy I was an automotive tech, pretty much the same field in the military. So I was better automotively than he was. I Showed up late one Saturday, I had to work part of the morning that Saturday. It just so happened he bought a power steering kit for his truck to install. By time I got there to help he was just trying to get the pitman arm centered. It was always steering to far in one direction or the other. I remember, it was such a hot day, he was soaking wet. I told him to get in the truck had him center his wheel, took off the pitman arm, had him turn all the way left and marked it, all the way right and marked it. Centered it and put on the pitman arm. He test drove it. Came back and said fuck you. LOL. It was so funny. I miss him.

He was my father and didn't have to be. I was born in Bremerhaven west Germany, he and my mother adopted me there while stationed there when i was eight. He adopted me, a friend of his adopted one of my brothers, and another friend another brother and sister.

Thank you so much for participating in our event and sharing the story of you and your father. The entire story is really touching. Your recollection of installing the power steering kit was both vivid and engaging. 🤣 If you have any meaningful photos of your father's work, your outings together, or anything else you'd like to share, that would be wonderful.
