Automated adjustments are only as good as the inputs/sensors chosen to determine the outputs, and the people who programmed it. This one is not very bright (pun intended).

The short answer here is to go into settings (the gear icon), display, turn off automatic, and manually adjust the brightness and contrast to your liking. It was one of the first things I did and I agree it's too bright. Their failure was not allowing a daytime and night time custom contrast and brightness to be saved by the owner, but maybe you can find one combination that works in all light (or at least more tolerable than what it does automatically).

They should also allow changing of the ridiculous white background too. That would make it easier to find one pair of custom brightness and contrast that could be acceptable in all light.

PS, I don't find the automatic screen brightness "feature" works very well on most smartphones either.

I also recommend adding the Screen Protech kit cuts down either way on glare and finger prints. I will say I had a bubble right under the 80 on the speedo and after a month it went away. Yes I sent the link to the Tacoma kit because for some reason in it includes protection for the shifter and climate where the 4Runner kit does not. https://screenprotech.com/collections/shop-toyota/products/toyota-tacoma-screen-protech-kit
I installed the Tacoma kit, with the matte option for the 14” screen. It’s fantastic.

Just clarifying since I bought one of these as well, the "Anti-glare" is the matte option correct? Picked up my Mudbath in Tempe, AZ last week and having it shipped to Texas currently. Should be here tomorrow and I plan on installing this first thing.

Anti glare just keeps your old lady from giving you dirty looks when you spend money. But also is the matte option

Yes indeed! The kit also comes with protectors for the HVAC and shifter. And congrats on your new ride! You’ll love it.

Is there a way to turn the infotainment screen off. I'm picking up my 4runner next week and will have to drive through the night
