As the title reads, I think my speedometer is off my +2 MPH. I set my cruise control to 77 MPH and I discovered the possibility of it being off by 3 different speed readings that I'll list in order of discovery.

  1. Waze App. I noticed that my Waze was showing me at 75 MPH not 77. I don't know how accurate Waze is but considering it's GPS, I do have confidence it's accurate.
  2. Construction radars on FWY. There was some construction speed limit signs that had radars. I came across 4 of them and all clocked me at 75.
  3. Tachymeter on watch bezel. I have a Citizen watch that has a tachymeter. I measured my speed and yep, 75.
I'm curious to know if anyone else has observed something similar or is it just me? Could it be specific to the tire/wheels I have? Running the 265/55/20. If it is off by 2 MPH, can the dealer recalibrate it to read accurate?

Any and all input is appreciated.

cruise control set point and actual will vary. until you set it precisely, they will never match.

our 23 tundra does this, i can set it to 74 and actual will be 73 or 72. even my 2014 will be off by 1 mph if i dont set it correctly. thats what happens when you go from a vacuum system to a stepper motor setup to a digital control. as the systems went from a crude approximate speed control to a more accurate one, your set point becomes more critical on speedometer display. since the display only shows single digits, if you are set at 74.3 is will show as 74. but if you set it to 74.5/6 the actual may show the same as 74 as the set point.

its really finicky in the new toyota's

this is guessing you are using oem tires and wheels.

First no one knows what you driving. Did you put bigger or small tire on a vehicle. Your 265/55/20 you mention look like stock tire on a Trd sports . Did you put these tire on your vehicle from another Trim model. Were these the stocks factory tires came on this vehicle.
Any way I been running tire 2” taller on a vehicle over 6 years. The speed odometer is off in every speed. At ten mph its doing 12, fifty mph it doing 52mph. We talking about 2mph just drive two mph slower. The average person drives over the speed limit more than 2mph every day. If You have brand new tires 33” tall their is a rotating speed. At 40,000 miles of driving wear and tear your speed odometer will be off a little. Those 33” tall tires are now 32.5 or 32 inch tall.

Some people may look at this topic really. But you could live in a town or city were cops give everyone a ticket 2mph over the speeds limit. I always drive 2-3 mph under the speed limit for these speeds trap towns.
The Mr perfect guy will go to the dealership or get a tune to fixed this problem. Good luck

I was wondering about calibrating myself. When I went to 35" tires on my Tacoma I used the Rough Country Speedometer Calibrator. It was worth the expense because it was so far off. The speedometer would say 75 I was really going around 81. Currently my speedometer is within .5 mph of everything I tested it with. I have a TRD Off-road with the stock 265/70R18 and I am going to be replacing them with some slightly larger BFGoodrich KO3. It's possible that this is basis that Toyota sets for all of the 4Runners regardless of tire size. When you calculate the size of the tires you have and compare that to what I have you will run around 2mph slower. I had this issue with my mini Cooper when I first purchased it. I replaced the tires with a slightly larger diameter and it was dead accurate afterward. I was annoyed because when the speedometer reads slower you're racking up miles faster than you actually are and will skew the gas milage numbers.

I agree, this is the conventional wisdom from last gen Toyota and what I expect to be the same this gen.

In particular I'm somewhat worried for SR5 as it's on the order of 7% difference between 30.5" and 32.6" - even if 32.6" was spot on that's still like 5mph difference at highway speeds. I have my doubts that Toyota, with a history of lazy one-size-fits-all speedo programming, cares enough about the single significant outlier model to correct the speedo for SR5. Just gotta throw away that 245/70R17 trash asap I guess

On my ORP, I've made the same observation. Toyota's speedometer is displaying 2MPH higher than my GPS apps speed display on CarPlay (Google Maps/Waze). The slightly larger tires on the ORP account for some of this at highway speeds.

You would think with everything being electronic now it would be a simple ODB2 configuration tool to adjust it.

I came from Ford so it was a pretty simple affair just buying a Forscan dongle, hooking up my laptop and changing a setting for tire size. It was the same kind of cheap ELM327 dongle as people have been using with Carista. Amazed that other manufacturers or software vendors haven't thought to do the same over the last 10 years

I too have observed the situation described above. Speedometer says 77 and Waze says 75. I am stock tire size on ORP.

to be clear on above, this seems consistent regardless of using cruiser control or not

The Limited trim comes stock with 265/55/20 so they are the OEM tire/wheels. I believe the Platinum trim is also running this size as well as the TRD Sport as @theo mentioned.

No need since I'm going 2 MPH slower than speedometer reading. This actually works out perfectly since wifey has a lead foot. She goes 11 over on the FWY so it'll fall in line with what my LEO buddy told me, "9 your fine, 10 your mine" hahaha

Yes. Noticed it on some city driving too not just HWY speeds. Speedo read 42, Waze read 40.

Appreciate the insight and knowledge provided. As mentioned, I was curious if anyone else observed what I was experiencing. At least now I know I'm not the only one.

My 2011 speedometer has always read +2MPH faster than any radar sign and/or Google maps.

Ends the warranty quicker if it's reading faster/more miles than actual. Was really bad on my 2004 but my 2018 and now 2021 are closer

My Tacoma and Tundra did the very same thing. My complaint. The vehicle is logging mileage at an incorrect rate. 36,000 miles is happening quicker

@RollingRocker mentioned this in a reply above and it went over my head but now that both @Vincenzo and @spyder40 mention it again, it clicked. I wasn’t too worried about the speedometer being off, I just figured I'll drive a bit faster so I go my intended speed but if this is going to impact my milage warranty than I'll look to getting it corrected. Wondering what the dealership will say, I have a feeling they'll try to brush it off as a minor thing.
