After my first adventure out, I couldn't shake the fact that having a GoPro would be an amazing addition for any trail riding I do. So in typical hyperfixated compulsive me fashion, I bought one, and then of course had to test it out.
I rallied up a friend with his Tacoma, and ventured out to the same path, in hopes I could find the same hill that took out the frontier and titan to put the 2nd gen and 4th gen head to head.
Turned out to be an amazing day out, my friend brought along his expensive camera to snap some photos of my Tacoma. We hope to gather up a crew of people and drive the ice roads this year before the winters over. Definitely looking forward to getting some footage.
The temps were just after dropping again to around -15c after a few days of mild temperatures, knowing we had to cross a river I was worried about what the ice condition would be like, but I also knew the river was extremely shallow in that area and slow moving.
The river ended up being completely fine after minus a rough patch we were able to avoid, and the trails were looking great with a fresh layer of snow hardly touched by any ATV's, Side by Sides, or Skidoos.
Unfortunately, the GoPro was worrying me being outside in the cold temps, I didn't want to chance losing the footage so I decided to mount it inside the vehicle. Seems like I trusted my gut as the camera was just starting to act a little wonky when I was bringing it in. So, because of that, all my footage features my destroyed windshield.
Ended up logging the trail with onX because I wasn't exactly sure of the route to take, and I didn't want to get myself lost given the vast amount of forks in the trail. This did end up coming in handy.
We met a few people along the way, but for the most part it was just ourselves. Finally we found the spot we were looking for and I was finally able to get that footage I was so sad to miss before. Sad to report the 2nd gen outperformed the 4th gen though. In my defense, I went AFTER he iced it all up, and most the majority of attempts I was trying to do it in 1st gear to save my clutch a little. Definitely needed to be in 2nd gear.
Here's the 2nd gen attempt
And here's my attempt. I had a few attempts cut from this one lol, the full version can be found in the GoPro footage below.
Here's the edited GoPro footage, removed a lot of crap, was about 1:30h of footage.
Here's a complete time-lapse of the GoPro footage. Minor cuts, only when needed. (It's actually a 20 minute video but I forgot to set the render region when rendering and couldn't be bothered to re-render)
The onX tracked trail:
And last, but most definitely not least. Here's some amazing photos my friend took that I can't stop sharing.
