  1. Tacoma 4WD Systems & Drivetrain Technologies Explained by Toyota

Look man, I know how all of them work. I have rebuilt numerous transfer cases, regeared, rebuilt stock diffs, etc. Here in a week or so I will be ripping out the ADD in my 3rd gen to replace with the full time FJ non-ADD tube so I have a more reliable 4x4 engagement (where only the tcase has to...
  2. Tacoma 4WD Systems & Drivetrain Technologies Explained by Toyota

You keep peddling this argument that the 4x4 can't handle dry pavement, but that is simply not true. If you are driving in a straight line, there should not be any vibrations whatsoever in 4WD. Dry pavement will not hurt anything in minor turns, and certainly not in a straight line. Vibrations...
  3. Recommendation on floor liners for a manual

You sure your fronts are X-act contours? Husky typically only offers Weatherbeaters for manual transmission trucks (difference in dead pedal is usually the difference between manual/auto), and the website appears to support that on the 2024 also (only offering X-act on auto fronts and all rear)...
  4. Stupid location for reverse on the 6M

I’ve accidentally gone into R at a stop probably 3 times over the 2+ years I’ve had my 3rd gen. It’s not a real problem for me, but a collar to lift up as a lockout would have been much better than the spring loaded version. My 6-speed Frontier had it to the right of 6th, and you had to push...
  5. Check your tire pressure when you receive your 2024 Tacoma

    Yep, makes no sense.
  6. Vibration and noice when engaged 4h

That’s ironic considering you claim you don’t need to exercise the system yet the owner’s manual tells you to. and no, exercising the ADD rarely works when stopped. You need to be moving for 4hi almost all the time. Driving in a straight line or even in some curves is 100% fine.
  7. Vibration and noice when engaged 4h

Electronic actuators can definitely seize up and quit working as they should if they are not “exercised” semi regularly. Probably doesn’t have to be once a month and certainly not for 10 miles every month but it’s a good idea to do so, if anything, to make sure you don’t forget. There is...
  8. 1-Piece vs 2-Piece Rear Driveshafts

Thanks for the comments. Curious to see if more chime in over time, but my guess would be 4x4 is 1-piece and 4x2 is 2-piece due to the additional length from no t-case. I had no qualms with 2-piece until the bearing went bad, now it annoys me and would prefer 1-piece. Not a fan of the aluminum...
  9. Manual Transmission issues?

R, 1, 2 are the exact same cluster of gears in both 3rd and 4th gen. However, the reduction gears in the trans make them different final drives. So since the trucks have the same axle ratio, the ratios of the 1 gears are different between the two trucks, but they are proportional. For example, I...
  10. Replacing oil drain plug with Fumoto - same size as previous gen?

I can only see it being risky for those that are exposed and may be hit by something on the road, ripping them out of the oil pan. The device itself is very unlikely to leak on it's own. There is the potential for the lever to be lifted and rotated I guess, but still very unlikely and they sell...
  11. AC dripping cold water in drivers side floor?

Well that sucks. Sorry to hear. The good thing is, the dashes actually come apart and go back together pretty easily in stock form. If you get a good tech it will probably be fine.
  12. AC dripping cold water in drivers side floor?

Not sure if the same, but in the 3rd gen, on humid days the box will sweat. Drain can be perfectly fine and box doesn't leak at all, yet will still drip onto the passenger floor because of sweat that accumulated and ran off. Wonder if 4th gen is the same. Maybe the box is leaking like the dealer...
  13. Speedometer not accurate

Not sure about Subarus, Hondas, or non-truck Toyotas, but the previous gen Tacoma and other trucks also do this. The Frontier did as well. All the 3rd gen Tacomas came with 1 diameter tire (30.6”) and they all read 2-3mph fast. The freeway test will be accurate. They can’t legally short you on...
  14. Check your tire pressure when you receive your 2024 Tacoma

If you're lowering them, why not lower them to the number on the sticker?
  15. Speedometer not accurate

Tons of factory vehicles have the speedometer read 2-3 mph slow at highway speed (but the odometer is still correct). This means if/when you step up to 33's, the speedo will be accurate, though the odometer will become a bit slow. There is nothing to be concerned about.
  16. M/T Whine 6th Gear

To be fair, that’s a 3rd gen regeared to 5.29 gears with only 1” larger tires than stock. A stock truck wouldn’t get that level of noise until more like 95 mph while I get it at 70ish.
  17. M/T Whine 6th Gear

I think the one from YouTube is a bit misleading - that one is diff howl and it does sound a bit different but it’s hard to hear. That one’s an automatic though so it definitely isn’t making any manual trans noises. If yours has the whistle like mine then it’ll be fine, as long as the noise...
  18. M/T Whine 6th Gear

Here, see if this sounds like what you hear. Use good headphones to hear it. I am in 6th, then 5th, then 4th. You can tell it completely goes away in 4th, and is there in both 5/6. The noise coming and going while staying in one gear is me letting off the throttle and reapplying...
  19. M/T Whine 6th Gear

Probably the same/similar noise that the RC62F gets when it's spinning quickly. Mine seems a bit higher pitch in the 3rd gen but different gear tooth counts, tire size, and diff gears, so that could make sense. Mine for sure does it in both 5th and 6th. It is the worst in 6th for sure. 100%...
