Your dealer might think a break in period is old school, but Toyota does not agree and clearly states a process. It is pretty easy compared to the strict regimes some people follow and is only common sense.

The manual says:
  • For the first 200 miles avoid sudden stops.
  • For the first 500 miles do not tow a trailer.
  • For the first 1,000 miles
    • Do not drive at extremely high speeds
    • Avoid sudden acceleration
    • Do not drive continuously in low gears
    • Do not drive at constant speeds for extended periods.
In case you haven't already figured it out, your dealer is clueless.

this is still far too vague

200 mi - sudden stops? what does an emergency braking situation have to do with the engine?
500 mi - trailer - self explanatory
1000mi - what is an "extremely" high speed? what is "sudden acceleration"? continuously in low gears? unavoidable if you're driving around town
constant speeds for extended periods? what is an extended period?

Brakes "bed in" with some miles, say 200, lol. Before that happens hard applications can damage the pads and lead to excessive pad wear and rotor damage. It is a break in suggestion for your brakes and has nothing to do with the engine, which is not the only thing that needs breaking in.

I think extremely high speed is obvious, lets just say driving very much over the speed limit. Sudden acceleration is mashing the throttle rather than driving sanely. Your truck will not remain in low gear even in around town driving unless you command it to,.

Extended periods is subjective, I agree. But most people should be able to come up with a reasonable estimate, say an hour or two.

Bed in instructions are the opposite of that.

Obvious is not obvious.

Outside of just bouncing off the Rev limiter 99.9% of this doesn't matter.

I got my '24 Sport Dec 7, 2024, bone stock except for the Toyota tri-fold hard tonneau cover that I had installed at the dealer two or three weeks later due to back-order. Total mileage at the moment is about 2,300 miles.

With the cold northern Illinois temps and winter gas, I've been averaging mid 16s to mid 18s MPG with mostly in-town driving. I do occasionally hit the highway but don't usually look at my trip mileage/economy, instead calculating every time I fill up. With that said, after reading this thread, I have been looking at my trip info and it has been generally pretty similar to my tank averages.

I started on ECO mode but have switched to Normal mode for the past thee tanks. I like that it is more responsive in normal and haven't seen a drop in MPG. I generally drive fairly sedate and got my Total Average (I reset each time I fill up) up to 20.3 with mostly city driving and felt pretty good about that. Again, colder weather and winter gas are probably keeping MPG down a bit.

I love my Tacoma and am enjoying the driving experience. No immediate plans for upgrades/changes.

I should have stated - I have been running 93 octane and driving mostly in Normal mode. Ran Eco mode for the initial 1K miles then switched to Normal.

Last road trip (735 mi) I got 19.7 which is way down for me, but I just added a rack to my shell. Had one 45 mile stretch that was 14 due to headwinds.

Thought I would add it here. During the winter I added 4-60 lb sand bags to the bed for better traction. That decreased my mileage down to 15 mpg during the winter. It was worth it as the truck handled the snow, rain and ice much better.

Now that they are removed I am back up to 18.

You don’t like to get near empty. :)
Does appear that way, but it’s really just more my habit of filling up over the weekend so it’s one thing less to deal with during the commute week. Not quite enough fuel capacity for me to go two weeks between fills.
