I'm up in Canada, in the prairies...drive lots of actual gravel/grid roads, and in general our roads and highways are hot garbage all year long. I've always had "proper" mudflaps on all my trucks simply because without them (and running boards)...your vehicle will disintegrate at a rapid pace due to gravel rash, stone chips, and salt. So, having said that...the "Canada" Toyota mudflaps do not provide sufficient protection. One important note on them...the molded design will cut into your paint on the rocker, rubbing down to the body panel. My truck made a single trip home from the dealer on dry pavement, the odo is at 163 miles...and yes, the crappy mudflaps had already worn into the paint !!
I debated over the XL version of the RokBlokz flaps but decided I need maximum coverage and protection against gravel. Absolutely zero regrets with the XL's, love the look, precision design and install. This is a super premium quality product from the material itself, to the stainless hardware, and attention to detail on attachment to the vehicle. And most important - Made in the USA!! Pictured below is a comparison to the factory "R00" Canada splash guards, which IMHO don't protect from much (albeit a little more than the factory US flaps fitted down south...), and they damage your paint due to the molded design. If you have a TRD Off Road hybrid with the larger/wider 18 inch wheel and tire, I fully recommend the XL RokBlokz.
