Not to be a downer, but do you really want to be sleeping near a large volume of raw fuel? Just an observation. On a related note, I wouldn't be surprised if someone actually develops an auxiliary tank which properly mounts within the frame.

As a FYI, I've used and would recommend rotopax, however they have a couple of drawbacks in my opinion based on my experiences with them.

1) Costly, overpriced in my opinion.
2) Neck deforms, well mine did - kept it full on my SxS, and at one point when I actually used it, the spout leaked because the neck deformed, seems to permanent, although I suspect could be fixed with one of those costly metal spout assemblies I'm thinking.
I used to travel with a Rotopax on a motorcycle. They are the biggest pain in the ass to deal with as gas cans. Heavy, bulky, expensive, with an atrocious spout that gets more gas on the user than in the truck. Even on a motorcycle where 1 gallon was literally a 20% increase in fuel capacity, I never used it and finally just quit carrying it. For the rare times I needed fuel range, even the most ghetto setups worked just as well and cost way less.

On a truck that gets maybe 15mpg off road, what's the real utility of those Rotopax cans? The mounts, the hassle of venting them when it's hot, cold, change in elevation. The puny capacity. They seem to solve so little that a Menards jerry can can't do. 5 gallon capacity for $65 vs 1 gallon for about $60 with rotopax before the mount. Or a nice all metal flip lid Justrite 5 gallon can with a flexible nozzle, even though they're expensive, are truly a buy once cry once gas can that will outlast most lifetimes.

I'd be more inclined to try one of these fuel bladders. They're a 20L portable bag. Shipped from the UK to the USA, they run 86GBP or about $110 USD.

Desert Fox Folding Fuel Cell (20 litre)

The even more durable option to double the fuel capacity is one of these Scepter tanks, which are a good company that makes military fuel cans in Canada and the US. A 15 gallon tank with a pump, and tie downs will run about $150:
