Tacoma Production in San Diego?

Stopped by a dealer who has the an allocation for the SPORT 4X4 Premium 6FT Blue Crush I want, and he told me it is being built in San Diego, first week of June, because they are having labor problems in Mexico and Toyota decided to start Tacoma production here in California . . .

anyone heard ‘bout this ?

fact ? rumor ? tall tale ?

i thought that too, and he may have been blowing smoke, but he said it was a San Diego manufacturing location that was destined to be repurposed but due to issues in Mexico, they were ramping it up to keep up with demand. . . sounds like shenanigans

I work in a dealership and yes some of the Tacoma build sheets say San Diego and others say Mexico.

I have a reserved truck that says built in San Diego too. I’m in SoCal so hope this is true

My dealer told me that my truck is being built in San Diego on 6/10 too. but it has the VIN that corresponds to Baja. I thought he didn't know what he was talking about, or that San Diego is the port where the trucks get shipped to from Baja before being distributed across the country.

Toyota has had a plant in Long Beach since 1972, so it sounds like they might have supplemented their Mexican production with the Long Beach plant. This is the first time I have heard about that and it is very interesting, because it might show us how Toyota gets past tariffs on trucks built in Mexico.

It would still take a long time to move all production to Long Beach or to a new plant in San Diego and new lines often have more problems than lines that have built a model for some time.

This thread is almost a year old. If production were moving to California, we surely would have heard of it by now. From the looks of it, the Long Beach facility doesn't produce complete automobiles, but sheet metal and components.

I believe it would take a considerable amount of time to retool a plant to produce a different vehicle, even longer to online a new plant.

Fact and VINS don’t lie but salesmen do. If the VIN says Baja then that is where it is being built. All these folks believing a salesmen like they know anything is hilarious. They are also probably buying the “paint and interior protection” as well because the salesmen told them if they do t then their warranty will be voided.
