Over at carbuzz they compiled the top 5 Tacoma model years to stay away from:

2002 - 22 complaints - rust on the ladder-frame chassis, vibrating front brake discs, and windshield noise.
2004 - 24 complaints - more rust issues
2005 - 47 complaints - The hood and the roof were painted badly
2009 - 123 complaints - The radio would shut off sporadically, and the tiny display stopped working intermittently.
2016 - most complaints ever 162 - automatic transmission flaws, engine problems, paint (again), and drivetrain issues.

Only 5 combined complaints from 2021-2023 models

2016 SR 4x4 built Nov. 2015 with no issues at 122,000 miles. Still runs, now waiting for trade in for 2024 TRD Sport.
