Great post. I have switched so many things, that I wonder if I would have been better building from an SR5 base.
Probably the biggest regret is not waiting for a custom ordered truck. I took an OR off the lot, and paid for many items that I later replaced. The dealership does a spray on bedliner that complicates pulling the bed bolts. The PPF they installed was lacking, and I paid $900 for a better job.

No real regrets but I have the OEM soft bed cover which works fine but I've already ordered to Kuat Ibex rack system with full molle panels so I'll now have to sell the OEM cover. :D

I also have the OEM TRD Aluminum Side Steps which I like very much, but knowing what I know now, I might have opted for frame mounted rock sliders because they offer real protection and can still act as a step to get into the truck.
Yeah, that's what got me thinking about all this. I might sell the backflip and go for a decked system. At first I thought it wouldn't be useful but now I'm thinking it might offer more flexibility than the bakflip.

And as far as the side steps, my rock sliders are my favorite purchase, both for the looks and the utility of them!

Spacer lift unfortunately. Wish I just waited for Bilstein 6112/5100, or went with the Eibach pro truck.
I'm also thinking of a proper lift at some point. From what I heard the spacer lift affects the ride quality so I'll just wait and go full send on the lift. Anything in particular you didn't like on the spacer lift? Which one do you have?

C rated tires
I went back and forth on this and decided to go with SL rated tires and I don't regret that one bit. For what I do, it didn't make sense to have the extra weight. I got $400 for my OEM tires. You might want to think of going SL and selling your C's if you're unhappy. I bet they'd sell.

Not a fan of the power tailgate, just think it will not stand the test of time. Plus, seems to have issues in the winter with the ice and snow. However, it is kind of cool.

I'm in the same boat. I live in Florida, so no snow down here, but it creaks every time it goes up or down. I need to figure out what needs to get lubed.

Anyhow, I just don't like it. I feel it is just one more electronic to go bad in a few years.

Wish I got the black fabric interior instead of boulder. Easier to keep clean?
Also should have got the integrated brake controller seeing how it's basically impossible to wire in after the fact.
I went with the softex specifically for this reason. It's much easier to keep clean in my humble opinion. I have seen some pretty sweet seat covers on the market. You might want to look into those.

I have a few temporary accessories. I don’t think of this as a regret, as my thinking is that I want to see if I’ll use it, and more vendors will be available later.

1. Bed Cover $380
2. Side Steps $200
3. Leveling kit $410

I wasn’t sure if I’d use the bed cover. At some point I want electric steps, and I’ll wait until I get my elevation figured out. The leveling kit is looks, eventually I’ll get a full suspension kit. In each case, I expect I can sell the above and recover some cost.

I 100% agree with you on the Tonneau Cover. I originally purchased the Bakflip MX4 but had fitment issues and ended up switching to the OEM hard tonneau cover. I also wish that I went with the ReTrax with the T slots that are more compatible with bed racks. So I will probably sell my OEM Tonneau cover when the time comes to add a bed rack. I do love the look and function of mine and I have seen some racks that do work with my cover so I guess time will tell.

I'll start off by saying this is not a hate post.

I was just curious if anyone has jumped into some part of a build then immediately (or not so immediately) regretted it or wished they went a different route. For me, I think mine is the Bakflip MX4. I will say it's a pretty good tonneau cover but knowing how I use the truck, I think I would either prefer a decked system or maybe even a retractable tonneau cover.

That's my first "regret". What kinds of things does everyone else have that they wish they would have gone a different route? Maybe we can get a list of things so other people take a second to consider the add-ons to their trucks.
Not a build regret per say but I wish I did wait for available trail hunters. I got my truck beginning of last year snd it was nest impossible to get s train hunter. I do wish I waited. I went with off road. I’m thinking of trading in for 4 runner trail hunters we’ll see. It is nice not having a truck payment however.

True, but I'm not that unhappy. I have the Wildpeak A/T4Ws, and they are quiet and comfortable. It's just a bit of gas mileage penalty. I'm just not going off road enough to the point where I'd need C over SL, but I didn't know that at the time. It's an interesting hindsight question though. If I remember correctly, the SL cost just as much as the C at the time.

I took my 2016 Tacoma in for work and got talked into a 2025 Site unseen. I have no use for 4 doors so wanted an extended cab like my 2016 With a 6 ft bed. I should have done my due diligence better. I had no idea that extended cab was just two doors until after it arrived and I was already in to new truck mode. I also expected to be able to install a brake controller so I could easily move my utility tractors around. First the extended cab is just a two door truck with little access to the space behind the seats. Second no brake controller install without ripping into the wiring or installing a wireless controller. Third I believe my 2016 got better gas mileage even with over 100K miles on it. Also anyone have problems hitting there head on the door jam when getting in? I am only 5’10” and with the seat back I still hit my head climbing in the truck. I will admit I am not as flexible as I was 50 years ago.

I think the prices are mostly comparable if not the same. I went with Nitto Terra Grappler G3s specifically because they had an SL version. I don't think Falken offered an SL if I'm not mistaken.

Not to sound completely insensitive to this post, but it always baffles me how people buy vehicles sight unseen without doing their research. I would assume most of us on this forum bought sight unseen because they weren't available yet in 2024. Ollie is definitely not the first to feel buyer's remorse, but it's still surprising that people buy without knowing what they are getting ahead of time.

besquaremtb I did by unseen and I will live with my purchase. I have had multiple Toyotas and this was my fourth Tacoma. I was mostly upset with the salesman and myself for assuming the 4th gen would be similar to the previous generations, my mistake. I found yesterday I also missed something on my wife’s 6th Prius. All the others had a spare tire. Her 2024 does not and you can’t get one. Found that out when I hit a pothole with it blew the front tire and when I said no problem I will just throw on the spare all I found was a can of sealant and a small tire pump. It was useless. Both cases caused by my making the wrong assumptio.

I have few regrets but questioned the rigid bed covers from observing others and my use. While still undecided on getting a tent topper I have no regrets getting a Fas-Top that gets me an open bed or topper with easy. They might not be for some here but I sure like it for a work oriented light truck.

We did a lot of comparing competing pickups, larger, and smaller. I think that's why some things people gripe about with gen 4 are not a bother.

One other important thing for the ultimate end or build was getting the right version in the first place. In prolonged shopping and now ownership I did not get what many do like buy a version without a locker and then put big tires on, and the lift and level stuff. A long bed OR with better seating package has been great for my use that's off road a lot.

Maybe this pic will explain the beauty of the Fas-Top.
