How Calty Design Research Defined the Essence of the All-New Tacoma

2024 Tacoma How Calty Designed the All-New 2024 Tacoma clay model 2024 toyota tacoma 4th gen CALTY design studio

Focused on the theme of a “Badass Adventure Machine,” Calty Design Research led the design efforts for the all-new 2024 Toyota Tacoma.

“Our primary design goal for the all-new Tacoma was to be authentic to the way our customers use their trucks for rugged outdoor fun,” says Kevin Hunter, president, Calty Design Research. “We looked at our truck DNA and the Toyota Baja race trucks for inspiration to capture the extreme spirit of offroad adventure. High lift, big tires, slim body, and a powerful athletic stance define the iconic Tacoma look, referred to as ‘Tacoma-ness’.”

Watch the video below to find out how Calty’s designers brought their vision to life.

This is lovely, considering how one sees so many stupid copycat accusations against the Tacoma with the Colorado and Frontier. Pretty ridiculous, when this sketch of a TRD Off-Road was drawn in 2020 and obviously the final article. All the surfaces look final in this 2020 drawing, meaning the mockups were created even before that.

Then you see this sketch from 2019...

It looks like a Toyota and nothing else. The competition had an inspiration that they can't let go of borrowing from clearly...

You can't exactly accuse Toyota of copying themselves can you?

I haven't noticed anyone saying they were coping, however designs anymore all have similarities to something else so someone is bound to find something they think looks like another vehicle.
