Came across this wonderful forum while researching price information on the new gen Tacos. Considered Ranger and GMC Canyon, but scratched the GM off the list due to their issues with transmissions and possible other QC problems. So its down to Toyota and Ford, but am partial to Toyota for its legendary reliability, build and materials quality (compared to Ford) and not the least the availability of manual transmission.

Did the build sheet on the Toyota website and sent it out for a dealer quote to get an idea of how things work as this will be (hopefully) the first new vehicle that I special order. Had one of the local dealers reach out. According to the sales rep there may be a delay in getting the TRD 4x4 with manual transmission. He also pointed out that they if they are able to get me on the list, they would sell the truck for no less than $2k over MSRP (came down from $5k at the start of the conversation without any real grinding). I understand that the new Tacomas are hot and luckily I am not in dire needs of getting one right away. Still, would like to see if there are any contradictions to what the forementioned sales rep told me and if there are deals out there. I would consider getting a truck from an out of state dealer but not sure how that would conflict with California smog regulations, unless all trucks sold in the US are 50 state legal...

Those are the manual Sport allocations showing up in CA. First price column is MSRP, second price column is dealer price, the one after that is markup if any.

Thak you very much for this great information. Would prefer to get the truck sooner than later but can hold off until the market cools off.

Since these all have an MSRP, I can presume these are all built units? Is it possible to have one configured?

As i understand it you can make your preference known and your dealer can submit. Then Toyota makes the decision to manufacture. If they do it will get scheduled and allocated to dealer.

Also, many dealers ship nationwide, I would not pay more than msrp.

I reached out to Jim about a month ago and he was great! Originally I was looking at a manual Taco but the selection on the west coast was extremely limited and Jim's greatest area of influence appears to be the opposite side of the country. Then I saw the 6th gen 4Runner and was really intrigued. Doing further research on the 4Runner I came across some unconfirmed info that Toyota may build 6th gen 4Runner with a manual trans as that model shares the chassis with the Taco.

Moving further, I thought about riding out the hype with both the 4Runner & the Taco and contemplated about leasing a current model year 4Runner. Jim offered some deep discount on a 2024 4Runner OR Premium but only from dealers that he works with located outside my area. Realizing that I was sort of all over the place jumping from model and year, I am taking a step back to wait and see the direction the market will head. There are several So Cal dealers such as Longo and Hamer that will sell at MSRP but only what they have on the ground. If I am spending this much on a truck, I would want to personalize the configuration.

Hope I didn't bore anyone here... just sharing my thoughts and where I am at with the process.

Not boring. Always interesting to read others’ thought processes & reasoning to see where their head is at. Might help narrow down a guy’s own thoughts. I’m here & still haven’t decided on Taco vs. LC. Vs. 4R. Maybe GX? Or stick with Ford & go Ranger. So I hear ya for sure on jumping around all over the place!
