I drove a 2017 Camaro before someone decided to run a red light and crash into a. Mini-van then me. I was unharmed but now I am driving a family car till I can get in a 2024 sr5 Tacoma I ordered. I think I can live with the 8 inch screen but truthfully I am eyeing up that 14inch. Sadly I want 2 doors more than I want to pay more for a sport or off road and wind up with a 4 door. So, I have done my research and while I plan to confirm it, it seems like swaps are going to possible. This is the same system in the 22-present tundra and the same system that is going to be in the 4runner. Swaps have been proven possible for tundra owners with the only question being if your car came with JBL or not does it effect compatibility. The vent panel would need to be swapped or modded depending if your buying a screen vs swapping with someone due to the volume knob. The wiring harness if like tundra is likely the same with dummy plugs going behind the vent or into the 8 inch seeing as it has the knob attached. I write all this to see the communities thoughts. It looks like already AliExpress has aftermarket 14 inch displays for the tundra and in a year or 2 most likely less they will be setting up to sell to Tacoma and 4runner owners. I would of course prefer Toyota infotainment, a stock look, and OEM but haveing found the part number it's about 9k to buy from Toyota. Which is not happening obusiously. Anyways anyone been looking into this like me? If you reading this and If you see a sport or off-road with the infotainment upgrade but not JBL and you don't really want it but can't find a truck without it near you and are in Georgia I would probably pay you a grand and a half to meet up at public place and do a swap. I should have my truck in before the end of may if the dealer is right on thier time guessing. Any other mods people looking at? Thoughts?

I mean... I guess all that is technically possible to pull off and I assume you are well versed in this kind of thing and have done these type of mods before. But me, personally, I wouldn't do that much irreversible hacking on my truck for 6 inches of screen space. I can't even begin to imagine what something like this would do to your warranty.

Given your stated dilemma, I'd have to tell myself I can have a 2-door or a 14in screen, but not both and go from there. If the large screen was that important to me (and it sorta was), I'd just pony up the $$ and have it come off the line with the screen I wanted and suck up the 2 extra doors. But that's just me.

I appreciate your response and open honesty. I did lay out the dilemma and I would much rather have 2 doors and a shorter overall truck than the extra screen space. I would however have paid good money for a 2 door off road trim if they offered it. I honestly don't really expect/recommend somebody to come out and want to swap even for cash as with the tundra's you risk losing Toyota's navigation and supposedly some people lost remote start, but that sounded like a part number issue. One thing is if your dealership isn't willing to sinc your vin to the screen you might lose over the air updates. It theoretically shouldn't hurt your warranty besides no coverage for your screen, but I can't say some dealership wouldn't use it as an excuse to get out of something electrical. But you best believe if a truck gets totaled in the future and a screen goes to eBay or a nice looking aftermarket comes out I will be interested. I just need my radio, backup camera, and Android auto to work. I test drove a truck already of course and can live with the 8 inches, but I like to work on my vehicles and eventually this will be on my to do list. Otherwise I still think I am going to very happy when my truck arrives, it just more fun for me to play around with things and I already got the off roads wheels with tires off of eBay for under a 1000 Dollars an absolute steal if you ask me. I'll sell the sr5 wheels and probably plastic dip my front emblem to start and will see what mods I want to do after that over time as I drive it.

I just came off the Toyota site and goofing with the configurator. Was hoping that maybe the Prerunner would come with the option of a 14in screen, but no dice.

I suspect that once you get your truck and start modding, you may find that the smaller screen is fine. I do like the 14" screen, but I also have the multiple cameras that utilize that real estate. I think if I was using it strictly for back-up, Android Auto and audio sources, I'd be OK with the 8" screen.

At any rate brother, good luck to you on whatever you decide. But if you do decide to do this swap mod, make sure you create a tread and take plenty of pics so we can follow along with you. Like I said, I couldn't do it myself, but you'd have me glued to my screen watching you pull it off.

Yeah, it been an experience buying/reserving so far. I was already looking at the Tacoma before my Camaro got totalled, but once it happened I didn't/don't want to stay in the car I am in now (mother's 2013 Hyundai Elantra coupe) too long. I originally was thinking the pre-runner for the styling, but was a bit disappointed it's RWD. Anyway it's not an option anyway considering there are only 6 allocated in the whole US. Speaking of two doors not counting Prerunner's and not willing to live with the IMHO underpowered SR (coming from a former Camaro owner) there are only 17 2 door SR5's out there right now and my original preferred color Underground was always taken. I finally put a deposit down on a 4x4 celestial silver metallic one which while my second choice on color originally has honestly grown on me after seeing it with black accents and after seeing underground under heavy lighting. It is possible by the time a screen becomes available I will be less interested and have some better toy/home improvement/mod in my sights to put my money into. I really don't think it will be difficult though there is already a YouTube video out on how to add a amp and the radio just has 4 10mm bolts holding it in. It's the same plug set up as the tundra based off pics and if Toyota did what they did with the tundra the volume knob wireing should just be stuffed into a dummy plug somewhere back there on 8 inch model's. If I do it one day rest assured I will be sure to post/ show off here.

>>snip<< Thoughts?
Hey, Michael, welcome to the forums!

You know, I had the same thoughts as you. I really wanted a two-door truck but also wanted the bigger audio/info upgrade. However, the deciding factor for me was that the Off-Road (I need rear lockers) doesn't come in two-door.

That being said, I have driven every trim level with and without upgrades. The 8 inch screen isn't bad at all. Especially in the SR and SR5 trims. The only reason I landed on a 14 inch screen is because the upgrade trim I settled on has it included.

My suggestion would be to use the money you would have spent on the screen for upgrading your speakers or another aspect of your truck.

Simply because, you don't get anything extra with the 14 inch screen.

It displays the exact same information as the 8 inch screen, it's just more zoomed in. You won't get any extra app space or widgets by upgrading to the 14 inch screen. And if your eyes work as good mine, you'll be fine.

I mean, do you really need someone in another vehicle to be able to see what you're listening to?
That's what it really boils down too. If you're trim level doesn't have 360 cameras or PVM/MTM, you really don't need that 14 inch screen, it's a waste.

But, keep us posted if you decide to do the upgrade, I'm interested in the cost/time commitment involved.

I too want a two door and find it frustrating that you can no longer get it in sport or off road trim. You can basically buy a stripper sr5.

Two wheel drive and the 5 foot bed are non starters for me, so that eliminates the Prerunner. I have to choose between a bare bone SR5 Xtracab (if they ever start making them) and a double cab long bed that won’t fit in my garage.

Yeah, its too bad Toyota didnt integrate the small screen into the dash like they did with the Rav4. I think that would look awesome!
Good Luck!
