This is from IIHS, a trusted evaluator. As a retired state trooper I am comfortable with my grandkids in the truck, not crazy about spilled drinks and crumbs in the back seat, but feel good about them being safe.

The new Toyota Tacoma crew cab, a small pickup, qualifies for a TOP SAFETY PICK award from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety thanks to improved performance in the small overlap front test.

While the 2023 model fell short, the redesigned 2024 version earns a good rating in this key crashworthiness evaluation. Measures taken from the driver dummy did not show any heightened risk of injury, and the occupant compartment maintained its integrity during the test.

To qualify for the 2024 TOP SAFETY PICKaward, vehicles need, in addition to a good small overlap rating, good ratings in the original moderate overlap front test and the updated side test as well as acceptable- or good-rated headlights across all trim levels.

An acceptable or good rating in a revised version of the pedestrian front crash prevention evaluation is also required. The new version replaces the earlier daytime and nighttime tests with a single evaluation that includes some test runs in daylight and some in the dark.

The Tacoma has a standard front crash prevention system that earns a good rating in the pedestrian test and acceptable headlights across all trims.

The popular pickup misses out on the higher-tier TOP SAFETY PICK+ award because it was not evaluated in the updated moderate overlap front test. An acceptable or good rating in the updated test is required for the “plus.”

This is helpful thanks. Can anyone find the roof strength test ratings or know when they will be conducted? On the third gen the roof could take 4.13X the weight of the truck and it was considered good. Given this truck is heavier the roof would need to be even stronger to have the same strength to weight ratio.

Now smart headlights are required for the plus rating. While the adjustability of the gen 4 lights and the lights are great, I can understand that high bar from driving my wife's car that has smart headlights.

This stuff is really important to use because we lost a family member in an accident that was from two jerks' brief moment of common bad behavior combined with his Ford pickup that had poor ratings.

The all of it was a lesson everyone should learn and not the the hard way. The first responders, medical examiner, the permanence, and how using roads is a shared responsibility matter.

The gen 4 achieving the status was a big part of our making the purchase choice.

We did not find that before our purchase but knew the gen 4 came out after the Ford (____ you. Ford for our dead family member's Ranger crushed flat) SuperDuty settlement. We figured Toyota likely addressed it when it was common knowledge some knew and did not respond to the problem.

When I had to go to the impoundment to get our family member's stuff, other impounded pickups had compromised passenger compartments. Our family member's prior generation Ranger roof was smashed flat to make going through the bloody mess more difficult.

My frustration applies to every single auto maker that cuts corners like that. No one should buy anything but a top safety pick based on our rotten experience. My niece was in a similar accident with a late model Outback. She walked away from what that sh_tty Ford did to our family member.

Is there a list somewhere of vehicles with smart headlights? What is your wife’s car?

My learning came from IIHS site or Consumer Reports where they stated the top safety pick status was changed to include the headlights performance. Maybe I learned when automotive news covered the law changed to allow array lights in the US.

She's got the VAG assembly that started on high trim VW packages and Audi models but now in more. I noticed a dealer loaner not fancy VW SUV had them. Her car is the last/special run of VW Alltracks called 2019s and sold into 2020. The Alltracks look the same but the late ones got updated electronics, bigger dash display and safety suite and a US/Canada only CXBB variation of the same engine that tests more than rated.

Her car is a super fun stealth machine with the features and manual transmission. Now we want to care for it well. A true wagon, the 6 speed, Haldex AWD.
