Has anyone noticed their grill shutters move ? anytime I’ve checked mine they have always been open. I don’t really understand what the purpose of the shutter assembly is for. I had the service campaign done to replace the shutter assembly and harness due to corrosion. Any insight would be much appreciated.

Aerodynamic efficiency and thermal management. When closed the shutters prevent airflow from entering the engine bay. Thermal management is one of the key reasons you can get almost 300hp from a 2.4L Turbocharged motor on 87 octane. Finally, emissions and fuel economy are also in play.

After having to replace mine, all I can say is that your entire dash will light up if you have a problem with it.

Why would you notice them move? They're not gonna move while the truck is stopped.

The reason I said that is some manufacturers use them to help the truck reach operating temp faster. My dodge ram remains closed until the truck is close to operating temp regardless of whether you are moving or sitting idling in park

while i'm sure they have a reason behind that....

...water is not flowing through the radiator when the thermostat is closed.

Right I understand but the fourth gen doesn’t have a thermostat they have a coolant control valve

I'm pretty sure the shutters just close when you are cold to help things get to operating temp quicker.

i was more referring to your ram (didn't know OEMs were getting rid of thermostats tbh) but in any case if they want the thing to get up to temp quicker and it's not moving then the shutters aren't going to do anything anyway. there should be no airflow through the radiator unless the trucks are moving and/or the fan is going.

it would be retarded if your ram runs the fan but then closes the shutters to block airflow.

That's a solid piece of information if so, I assumed all vehicles had thermostats and they were all a huge pain in the ass to replace

Now what am I supposed to blame when the vehicle is heated up and is still blowing cold air? 🤪

Our engines don’t have a thermostat, it has an electrical water control valve that the computer uses to decide where to send the coolant

One that wouldn't send coolant flow through the radiator until the engine was up to temp.

So it's an electric thermostat. Same shit.

Yes, but can also cut coolant flow to the heater core, restrict coolant and accelerate coolant flow through m the different engine componsts
