Description: In our latest comparison test, we head off-road in the Rivian R1T and Toyota Tacoma TRD Pro to see if hybrid power or a fully electric setup is better when the going gets tough. We put the all-electric refreshed-for-2025 R1T, in the more affordable dual-motor setup, and a hybrid-powered Tacoma TRD Pro to the test climbing hills, rock crawling, putting down power and more. Check out our video to see which one comes out on top when the pavement ends.

I mean, I think an EV truck is pretty interesting, instant power and torque is indeed fun, but I picked Toyota mainly because of reliability and reputation. rivian just hasn't been around long enough to prove anything.

And yeah, its also 30k more than my trailhunter is, which is _already_ stupidly expensive.

I generally like the edmunds videos. The lady is fun and doesn't take herself too seriously, but sometimes she teeters on the edge of too much. For me, I can watch those videos and enjoy them even though I don't necessarily agree with the takeaways. I agree that the tacoma clearly won the competition but it's always fun to see what all the vehicles can do. That being said, 90k is nuts! lol

I am a big fan of Rivian but that was just a stupid conclusion. She said the truck she didnt even test was the winner.

I almost bought an R1T Lauch edition when they came out. Can get a used one with low miles under 55K here in Dallas. If they had launched with the NACS Tesla connector and had access to the super charger network I would have bought it. I heard horror stories about CCS charging stations while road tripping. Love my Taco but that Rivian was something else! Biden just gave them 6 billion loan a few weeks ago. Not sure if they are going to make it.
