Not trying to self promote at all but I stumbled upon this posting and wanted to identify myself as the person making these silly things!

This was a fun winter project but one of the more difficult things I have ever reversed engineered.

If anyone has ordered from seeing it here and happens to have any sort of issue or concern once received, don't be afraid to reach our or send me an email info(at)hojoworks.com

I will try and take care of everyone as best as I can in the order received!

These are also slow and difficult to 3D print, so if anyone is waiting for theirs, I am going as fast as I can with my army of robots!

If anyone is concerned about the slight white discolorations on my demo photos, know that this is common with the material (ASA plastic). The plastic is stressed when it cools and creates white stress marks.

These show in the photo as it was still in development and it was one of the few nice days recently.

However in the item you will receive, these should be extremely minimal as it is post processed to remove as much of that as possible.

Not to spoil too much, but I also have other products in development that are electrically powered from the Flex Speaker port.

I am also developing a plug n play standalone speaker drop in, however with the limited size, it has been difficult to make a speaker that really outshines the JBL, as lame as that sounds. They just have far tighter integration than a DIYer will ever make.

Thanks to everyone for considering my side projects!

That's very impressive, OP. How will the plastic stand up to heat and sunlight?

Self promotion aside all together because wtf? I’d love to see more behind the scenes of what you’re working on if possible, I think a lot of us would be interested in that

This is made out of something called ASA plastic so it will do just fine! It is similar to ABS, the plastic we all know and love, but can potentially have better UV resistance. It will probably keep its color longer than the actual dashboard!

The "start getting soft" temperature of ASA is over 200 degrees F. So unless your Gatorade is boiling in the cup holder, you should be just fine!

I greatly appreciate the enthusiasm! I always feel weird talking about stuff I design in car forums because I don't want to get lumped in with the people who drop a sale link and run. Next thing you know you get labeled as a shill, or gatekeeper, or whatever it might be.

I know stuff like this is really niche in the grand scheme of things and will never make me rich, but if I can make things other people like too, I really enjoy that!

Here are some custom circuit boards I have made. One for handling the pogo pin connection, and the other for power regulation for my other JBL projects.

One of the main limitations already is that there is not a lot of amperage through the dock, so what we can actually do with the port, without modification, is pretty limited.

One of the other problems is that the dock is constant 12v power, not switched or accessory power. So making something that turns on and off with the truck is actually a little more tricky than you might think.

I believe I have a solution for this however, but it will need a revision of my power supply board.

The main thing I always wanted to make is a dockable, camera charging, action camera mount. Which I have actually made.

This 100% works, but needs some refinement, and the updated circuit board as described above.

The new PCB will handle all of the modern USB C charging standards gracefully, handle odd cable conversions such a USB C to micro B, and also turn on and off with the truck without any modification or wiring.

This should handle any modern GoPro, and works with the latest DJI cameras in my testing.

You can watch some demo footage here, it would look so much better with a proper polarizing filter to avoid the windshield reflections -

If there is any interest in something like this, I can certainly make them at some sort of small scale. Just know that these would take a lot of hand assembly, and have a fairly expensive BOM cost. However I think I can be competitively priced in the world of car accessories.

I have made a ported speaker box design, but the size of speaker you can realistically fit inside the space of the JBL speaker is pretty limited (shown with a 2.5inch speaker, 3 inch should be possible and is my next step)

The original JBL contains (2x) 2inch speakers, and one square passive radiator. If this becomes reality, this would be more of a late spring item, early summer item.

I would love to hear any feedback for other powered devices that people might want here. Pretty much anything that can charge with a 2 amp USB charger, and will fit in the shape is up for grabs!

Our Taco subculture, perhaps can even be called a cult 🙂, is all about the mods we do to our trucks. It’s great to hear from an innovator like you who is willing to also seek our end user input. As far as I’m concerned, and I am sure most on this site, please don’t ever feel like a shill or self promoter. I am looking forward to hearing more about your ideas! Thank you. I personally have no problem with an honest vendor who makes a good product informing the Taco cult about it on this site. Likewise, a warning to the vendor looking to rip us off, as anyone can see our group is equally vocal in sharing reviews of good and bad products!
