Anyone know of a video or write up on installing an aftermarket trans cooler on a gen 4 Tacoma? I plan on towing a lot and want to add one in an abundance of caution. I found a some tutorials for Gen 3 where they mount it in front, but I've heard of people doing it under the vehicle for gen 4 Tacomas. Do you have to bleed the system after you put a cooler on? Forgive my ignorance.

Thinking of something like this:

I don’t know if a tranny cooler can be mounted in front of the ac condenser without interfering with the cooling system louvers. I crawled under my TRD OR, non hybrid, and looked under the cab, inside the frame rails. Lots of room to mount a tranny cooler with an electric fan mounted to the tranny cooler. Just need to splice into the factory transmission oil cooler return line. Also, a temp sensor/fan switch can be utilized or a manual switch.

Thanks for the reply. I think I'm going to give it a try at some point in the fairly near future. Probably use the temp sensor. What can it hurt... I've seen several videos that seem to indicate that the engine cooling system is robust but the tranny seems to get kind of hot in extreme conditions, like slow towing up hills, which I do with my trailer going dirt biking/camping....trying to make my new ride bulletproof.

Do you know if you have to bleed the system after you add a cooler or just top it off? Hoping someone comes out with a bracket for an easy mount under the truck, although I'm sure I can make something that works...

No need to bleed the system, just top it off. Drilling holes in angle iron and painting the angle iron should suffice, also any steel can be used to form any shroud to protect the tranny cooler as well. some tranny oil coolers have flimsy aluminum and they can dent very easily, the stronger versions that are black in color, are much stronger. Here is an example of something may work

I read somewhere that the transmission system has both heating and cooling. You might talk to a Toyota service guy about how this mod could affect warranty.
