Something is wrong if it can't sit for more than a couple days. You have some sort of parasitic draw. Mine regularly sits for a week or more at a time in the airport parking lot.

I have heard of people using the app to remote start their truck every now and then if they're away for a month or more just to top up the battery and get some fuel moving through the lines.
already went to the dealer for it as I agree it should be able to sit, they tell me no draw outside normal parameters, it has sat since that visit for 3-4 days without issue since. voltage after 4days since visit was at 11 ish and started no problem. just keeping my eye on it and wanted it to be noted at dealer as well.

Please no thread jacking.

Any comments on the alternator being present?

It's pretty obviously intended. There are a few possible reasons people have mentioned. Could be the primary mode of charging for the 12v system, could be a secondary mode of charging should the hybrid system fail. Could simply be for providing supplementary power while the engine is running for emergency reasons.

Interesting. My 2024 Trailhunter built 9/24. No alternator. Just the single belt for the vacuum pump.

Also a US 2024 Trailhunter with a November build date. No alternator. Maybe a 24/25 split? Maybe US/Canada? As I said in another post there could be a couple reasons for deciding to utilize an alternator. Or it could just be that they wanted to run the hybrid and non hybrid motors through the same production line. Or some Canadian reason lol?

My 2025 TRD Pro has an alternator. Definitely for the 12 volt system. I don't recall if it may also help charge the hybrid battery pack at times.
The motor / generator is between the engine and transmission. It is a motor when you accelerate and a generator when you coast or brake. This is called regeneration or regen for short. (charging)
I think all information is in the manual about the hybrid system.

So since you have an alternator, does the manual have anything to say about it? Because my 24 does not have an alternator and obviously does not say anything about it in the manual. The hybrid system isn't really the confusion. The question is, why does the 25 have an alternator if the 24 didn't need it?

Ok here is AI from Google. I guess Toyo decided having an alternator was a good thing.
This is "AI" so could be totally wrong.

the 2024 Toyota Tacoma hybrid does not have a traditional alternator. Instead, it utilizes a hybrid electric motor that serves as both a starter and an alternator, according to Burlington Toyota. This hybrid system also includes a starter for backup.

Here's why:

  • Hybrid System:
Toyota hybrids generally don't have alternators in the traditional sense. The electric motor takes over the role of both the starter and alternator, providing power to the system and starting the engine.
  • Backup Starter:
While the electric motor handles most of the starting, there's also a traditional starter for a backup system.
  • DC/DC Converter:
Some forums suggest that the hybrid Tacoma uses a Bosch DC/DC converter instead of an alternator.

The 2025 Tacoma hybrid does have an alternator, but it's also equipped with a motor/generator (M/G) that serves as a dual role, functioning as both a starter and a power generator. The M/G is the primary power source for the hybrid system, while the alternator charges the 12-volt battery.

Here's why:
  • Dual-Function M/G:
The M/G acts as a starter, engaging the engine, and as a generator, providing power to the hybrid system and the 12-volt battery.

  • Alternator for 12-volt Battery:
The alternator is still present to specifically charge the 12-volt battery, which is essential for other electrical systems in the truck.

  • Hybrid System:
Hybrids use a blend of gasoline and electric power. The M/G, along with the hybrid battery and engine, work together to optimize efficiency.

  • Power Boost:
The M/G also provides a power boost when needed, like during acceleration, working in conjunction with the engine.

It's not wrong, it's just regurgitating the hybrid explanation. Not terribly helpful though because it doesn't actually say anything about the alternator that isn't just defining what an alternator does.

All we can do is guess, why '24 had none but '25 does. We need a Toyota engineer to enlighten us.
