5 hours away from home, stuck outside Richmond VA. Truck making awful rattling noise on the highway. Pulled off and somehow pulled right up to a service station

They threw it on the lift they said the rear end is smoking hot and there is play in the driveshaft/ujoint. (Edit: the prior statement was not proven to be an issue according to Toyota everything is normal)

AMA I guess as I am now waiting 2 hours for Toyota to tow me. Oh and this is the start of my vacation which is looking like is ruined.

Sucks under any circumstance, but especially on a long road trip/vacation. Hopefully Toyota takes care of you and you can enjoy your vacation.

If this is a QC issue, would be nice to know which plant assembled-

result of a 5 hour drive mostly highway, No I wasn’t in 4 hi, no way the locker was on accident. Pulled into a service shop the guy threw it on the lift said the rear end was smoking hot like it lost the bearing or a shim who knows. There was grease in it. He opened it and some poured out.

i had a whining/howling noise when I was lightly on the throttle between 70-75mph. Classic differential howl that at this point has plagued all Tacoma generations. Took it to the dealer and they drained the oil which was completely burnt and full of metal.

I would expect them to use the same driveline components, but with QC issues where the diff was assembled might be more important.
