One thing I learned from an old 4WD mechanic when you have not used 4WD for a while, about once a month on a straight road at a moderate speed switch into 4W Hi for about a minute to move the lubrication around. Do the same with 4W Lo for a few seconds being sure to keep the truck straight and slow if the roads are dry. This just moves the lubrication around and keeps things from getting stuck. I had my Gen 3 Sport for four years and put it in 4W Lo I think two times, yes I drive highway princesses. I do use them to get to the slopes and have never worried about getting home from the mountains after skiing. I know my profile says Venice, FL, but I also have a home in PA and make many New England and PA ski trips.
The user manual on Page 406 says to drive at least 10 miles every month in 4HI to properly lubricate.

If you want to cover 10 miles and only drive in 4HI for one minute, you'd have to drive at 600 mph ;-)
