On a related note, I wouldn't be surprised if someone actually develops an auxiliary tank which properly mounts within the frame.
I can neither confirm, or deny, that I have been talking with a company about this project. I assure you it won't be cheap. It will mount where the spare tire is, so you will need a spare tire solution.

With the aux tank that far above your 18 gal. primary tank, obviously no fuel pump is required.

Here is my question Pappy. I am guessing you wouldn't go without a spare, where would you carry that? Would a 50 gallon tank like you see on work trucks carried in the box work? Then you'd have almost 70 gallons!

I'm going to limit my aux tank to 15 gallons. Two reasons. First, weight. Second, since the fuel will need to be transferred with a pump, and since the fuel light on our 18 gallon tank comes on with 3 gallons left, I want to transfer all the fuel from the aux tank at once without over filling.

As far as the spare tire ... I have this bumper on the way from Victory 4x4. Though, I'm getting a dual swing out for a gas can too.

I'm sorry, but I can't justify a $2200 bumper and $1540 in swing outs. plus however much your yet to be released auxiliary tank will cost for 3 gallons of capacity. You will pay more just in sales tax.

You don't understand. I've been wheeling/overlanding for four decades. My truck is a tool, not an ornament. Function > form. I spend the money because those parts have a purpose besides looking good. I can easily justify the expense considering what I'm going to do with the new Tacoma. The tool needs to fit the job and "chrome don't get ya home." Shoot, the rear bumper is only the tip of the iceberg on my build. I'm just getting warmed up.

I've been wheeling/camping/overlanding my 4Runner for almost 30 years. It's time for an upgrade to something that won't beat up my old carcass. I'm looking forward to a modern ride, with more room. Though, the Tacoma will never be as capable as my 4Runner. As I said before, I have 35 gallons of gas onboard my 4Runner. I don't suffer from gas anxiety. I will be happy if I can have that much fuel available on the Tacoma.

So you do you, I'll do me. The Tacoma platform is broad enough to have multiple rolls. Simple.
