Keep the window down. Lock the truck. Put fob away. Try the button for tailgate. I don’t have my truck for now or I’d try it myself.

I definitely will give it a go-round mañana. On my TH there's def some interesting behaviors w/the tailgate & fob (fob tailgate control button not recognized when I'm in the bed/in my camper, also in generator mode tailgate will open but fob needs to be close by, etc).

Probably going to disconnect that tailgate switch in the cab if it can be opened without power or power off/no key fob present. That's a glaring security issue by Toyota if true. Not only is your tailgate at risk but the entirety of the contents in the bed for those rocking shells, campers and tonneaus. A $40 lock will theoretically secure your tailgate but the bed's contents can get cleaned out in seconds. You could rock a DECKED system but if they can get that tailgate down as easily as it's made out to be here, drilling through a couple lock cylinders on the DECKED drawers puts all that at risk too. And let's be honest those tailgate locks look like a joke for a determined thief.

yep you’re right - the tailgate button works w/cab locked & alarm system engaged + fob in a faraday bag SMFH. Huge security issue if you have a topper or tonneau with gear/things of value. Oh and the tailgate. Time to disconnect that switch and order a blank…

When tailgate access first was discussed I tested my truck. If the truck was locked and the fob was in range you could operate the tailgate. But when I moved the fob out of range the tailgate didn't open. I never tested the case where the truck is unlocked and the fob is out of range.

Now I will have to try both cases again. I was hoping it was as simple as when the truck is locked, so is the tailgate.

Isolated to that damn button inside the cab, whether locked/armed or unlocked. So yeah they gotta break the glass to hit the switch (3seconds) but the contents in the bed and the gate itself are vulnerable. It ls powered on my TH with the truck off, locked…huge FKING PROBLEM TOYOTA

edit - I suppose it’s not a huge issue if there was some disclosure/warning from manufacturer about. If all I need to do is disable a single switch I wouldn’t call it a crisis. Getting your shit jacked tho over a simple button poorly designed is however yuuuge.

Sheldon & team must think the world is kumbayah devoid of smash & grabs, can just build out an open overland kit and nobody would think twice about taking your gear or your tailgate WTF.

So the button is powered when off AND locked just like homelink. 🤦‍♂️ It’s why I can’t program my home garage to the mirror.

problem solved. Just need to put a blank on this now & a dummy connector on the lead to make it a PITA to re-wire. No need to spend $40 on a tailgate lock. Unless you use that button all the time. Stupid design to leave it powered w/system off without a fob

install an OB2 lock while you’re at it, on the topic of ‘if thieves are gonna break the glass..’ slow them down considerably in all vulnerable areas. The other deterrent I like is a seatbelt-to steering wheel lock / leave your OEM seatbelt chime as-is / it’s faster to cut through the steering wheel and they’ll be forced to listen to that god awful chime for eternity if they manage to drive off with the truck because drilling out that seatbelt lock will take all damn day there’s a hardened anti-drill spin disk sits above the key cyclinder lol
