Keep the window down. Lock the truck. Put fob away. Try the button for tailgate. I don’t have my truck for now or I’d try it myself.

I definitely will give it a go-round mañana. On my TH there's def some interesting behaviors w/the tailgate & fob (fob tailgate control button not recognized when I'm in the bed/in my camper, also in generator mode tailgate will open but fob needs to be close by, etc).

Probably going to disconnect that tailgate switch in the cab if it can be opened without power or power off/no key fob present. That's a glaring security issue by Toyota if true. Not only is your tailgate at risk but the entirety of the contents in the bed for those rocking shells, campers and tonneaus. A $40 lock will theoretically secure your tailgate but the bed's contents can get cleaned out in seconds. You could rock a DECKED system but if they can get that tailgate down as easily as it's made out to be here, drilling through a couple lock cylinders on the DECKED drawers puts all that at risk too. And let's be honest those tailgate locks look like a joke for a determined thief.
