That’s essentially my setup minus the tires and I got 17.5 l / 100 km (13.4 mpg) on my last 850 km of highway driving. Makes me think something’s wrong with my truck.

Yeah, I wonder about the same thing with my Pro. Although I have gotten higher mileage than that, it is probably very close to my highway average. When I drive it on the curves and hills of the Appalachian mountains where I live, with long grades that let it run on battery, I can get over 20 mpg. But just straight highway without any real chance for the hybrid system helping much, I never get over 18 mpg.

I also thought there was something wrong with my truck, but I am starting to think that it might be normal for these trucks. Highways have never been where hybrids shine, and our trucks seem to prove that.

I don’t see my battery kicking in all that often around the city honestly, and if it does it is for a short blast and then off, like seconds. I completely accept that this truck won’t get 10.3 l / 100 km, but my old gas guzzling 2006 taco with a V6, lift, arb number and winch, etc., got 15 l /100 km. Pretty sad when the 2024 inline 4 can’t do similar. But, it does have 100 more HP and double the torque.

All in all, if I assumed I was going to get say 13 l / 100 km, and I’m actually getting 16 l / 100 km. That’s 3,000 additional liters of fuel per 100K km. If the truck lasts 400K km, that’s 12,000 liters or ~$21,000 additional cost. Worth making a little noise about.

Totally agree. Making noise is really all we can do at this point. Either Toyota somehow faked the EPA mileage numbers or there is something wrong with my truck too. But a lot of people are only getting what are, so it seems like we have a lot of company.

EPA tests are useless these days unless you are very aero.

Highway doesn't get above 60 and it averages 48.3mph. Who averages that speed on the highway?


Oh, they do a high speed test. oh wait, thats useless too, it only goes above 60 for 30 seconds and the average speed is still 48 mph. who does that on the highway? how is that "high speed"?

So, I bet you Toyota does optimize for the test as much as they can, who wouldn't, but the EPA test are basically useless. Speed limits aren't 55 anymore.

Driving 65mph steady should get you around 22-23 in my experience so if you dont get that, something is probably wrong..

The interstates near me are mostly posted for 70m mph and a few mountainous areas are 65. But if you drive slower than 70 in either zone you are a rolling traffic hazard. You would need to be in the right lane with the trucks with your safety flasher on. My average is probably 73-74 mph and that gives me 19 mpg at the very best.

I will discus this at my next service appointment but I expect to be told it is normal for my truck. Some trucks seem to get the advertise mpg, but many don't. The info from @timetoeatpotatoes about the test conditions makes it hard to understand how anyone can get those numbers. You can be ticketed for going those speeds in many locations.
