I've only had the TRD Hybrid Sport since September, but very happy with it. Yesterday I went back and forth to the beach, about 65 miles, and made a point of gentle acceleration. I traveled NH back roads (40-50mph) all the way. Truck metered mpg said 26.4, old fashioned miles driven divided by gallons used was 26.2. I think that's incredible as I've owned many TRD Sport 6cyl MT and they were always in the 17-18mpg range.
I don't know acceleration numbers, but this truck feels faster also. Seems best of both worlds. I hope reliability and resale values are the same as previous Tacomas. If so I may never buy anything else!

What is your average highway mileage?
I have a gas model TRD Sport and I just went to Chicago from Western KY. I guess half city and half hwy 60 mph limit most of the way and that is what I set the cruise on. Averaged about 22.5 the first half and 24 mpg the last half. My normal work drive and around town if I’m easy on it is about 20 mpg.

Man, I must have a different engine than you guys. I get about 18.5 combined and I drive SLOW and accelerate without using any boost. Now can I fill it up on an interstate exit get right on the (flat) highway on a low wind day and get 22-23 on the highway? probably if I baby it. But real world stop and go traffic mixed with a little highway....hell no, no way.

This is usually around what I get too, but I have a lead foot (and a few tickets).

i have logged every fill up since i bought it in august. now at 5K+ miles. a mix of highway, country, gravel, and 4x4 roads. across all of that I have averaged 23.0 mpg. OR hybrid. i took off the front dam. i think that cost me about 1 mpg.

From the mpg checks I've done on mine; the mileage killers appear to be 1. Speed, 2. stop and go traffic.
I do almost no stop and go, and a lot of my driving is on country roads at 55-65. So, I'm seeing 22-23 most of the time. Hop on the interstate and do 75, and I see about 20.
My advice would be to drive the way you want and not worry about it. Unless you live in CA, in which case you're hosed.

This is nuts. I haven't seen anything over 16 mpg.....and I'm babying the hell outta the pedal. No extra weight besides 275's.....maybe something is wrong with the truck? Driving a Trailhunter

Even though the TH is a hybrid, you're also adding in anywhere from 600-1200 pounds compared to SR/SR5/OR. I'm sure that's a contributing factor as well.

That's a fair point, but I'm still a bit suspect that something is wrong. Any other TH owners out there have the same issue?

@Lets_Taco_Bout_It -- hard to see how an extra 600 lbs curb weight is leading to a 7 mpg deduction. maybe, i guess. is your vin in the transmission TSB? (mine is). there has been some correlation between unexplained low mpg and transmission issues. just a guess. probably not. but it is out there.

My truck is not a TH but a Pro, and my average is 17.2 mpg right now. The best highway run to date got me 19.1. I don't flog it or drive all that fast (VA is not the place to speed) but I get a lot lower mileage than some other hybrid owners. I have no idea why, but so far it is not improving as I add more miles.

@taco_overlander My truck has a VIN in the TSB range also.

here is my log -- the thing that surprised me is that the mpg basically is exactly the same as when i drove it off the lot. table is mileage/gallons/mpg for that fill up

Also, the hybrid on tacomas isn't your normal "hybrid". It wasn't designed to improve efficiency. I'm sure it can help some, but that's not it's main use case.

Very true. I bought it for the power and not to save gas and I do love the torque and pretty much everything else about the engine.

But I am only comparing it to other hybrids and there is some correlation between unusually low mileage and transmission issues as @taco_overlander pointed out. My truck consistently gets 7-8 mpg lower mileage than some other hybrids, which just seems strange. Toyota has no answer as to why that might be, which is also a bit strange IMO.
