My off-roading is some sand, occasionally mud, plenty of snow, but never anything too serious, and so I thought the Sport would meed my needs best. However, the drive modes (and the locker) on the OR make me think it may be a better choice so my wife, who has very limited driving in snow, and indeed myself, will be assisted by the drive modes, especially for the northern Idaho winters. Clearly the drive modes can't compensate for crap driving, but what does the team think on the effectiveness and benefits of the various drive modes on the OR in slippery conditions vs the more road oriented Sport?
You would have a much better chance of getting unstuck in snow or mud in the OR. Sport could likely do it, but better tires and a rear locker when all else fails will help.

People who buy these trucks to build off roader looking rigs, but choose the Sport model really confuse me. I guess the allure of that hood scoop is stronger than I realize.

Agree... though I think a lot of the current 2024 builds we are seeing on youtube are SR5 trims simply because they couldn't get an off road in time to be first on the interwebs.

I chose the TRD Sport with 6MT, that guarantees something what most overlook, and that is low 4.30 gearing in the rear axle. I had those gears in my 2016 SR 4x4 AC which helped to offset the 6-speed auto.

I never really had or needed a locking rear diff. My 2010 SR5 called the BOTT, or bug out tactical truck was a beast. 5MT and standard 4.10 in the rear 8.4" axle which I beefed up a bit to prevent axle twist and stuff.

I spend most of my time on pavement, my off-roading days are over. I will still build this TRD Sport in a simple way, only with a level kit, 265/70 R18 BFG KO2's at 32.6" tall tire. I live in rural Wisconsin and you need a solid 4x4 for inclement weather out here and basic duties around the property. Piece of mind to have good running ground clearance, low gears in the rear and a set of solid tires inn rural America. It is a requirement.

I also dig the phony hood scoop, gives the TRD Sport a more rugged look than the TRD Off-Road that can resemble the SR5 or SR variant. I will also add a Victory 4x4 front skid plate for lower engine protection over factory garbage felt thing.

My 2010 SR5 BOTT was sweet, but I will not build my TRD Sport that way. I live in the country now, no need to bug out of the city no longer.

If you say so, but taking a truck with street tuned suspension, no rear locker, no crawl control or descent control, to build an off road rig vs. buying the truck that was made to go off road is kind of dumb. And it's not like the TRD grill, black fender flares, or you know, TRD written on the bed would have someone confuse the Off Road for an SR or SR5.

Like I said though, the allure of that fake hood scoop is strong.

My 1986 Toyota 4x4 and 2010 Tacoma SR5 and even 2016 SR would disagree.

As long as it is a 4x4, it is built to off-road. I say that because I drove an actual street truck, my 2005 Tacoma X-Runner. I even built my old 1985 2wd Toyota to run 32" tires and went off-roading with it and it did just fine.

By the way, I did do a rally-cross even with my 2005 X-Runner likewise... top image

My X-Runner on Road America, Turn 14...

My 1986 Toyota before a Baja 500 off-road race...

Me with the legendary Toyota team down in Baja, good ol days with a T-100...

Never owned a TRD off-road, but still went out on the non-paved world. My TRD Sport will be next on my to do list.

I like your ride, you built it up nice.
