I think they tried to shift from 5th to 3rd and snagged 1st instead. A classic money shift that will trash any engine or drivetrain. I saw another video showing how close the gates are on that manual and how easy it would be grab 1st when trying for 3rd. If the clutch had not grenaded it would have severely damaged the engine by an extreme over rev.

I guess we will never know for sure, but my money is on driver error, which can have big consequences with a manual transmission, and something owners will want to be super aware of.

In vedio it does look like he is trying to go into 3rd and also rpm made sense . If he did go into first . First of all transmission wont allow it second rpm would have gone to redline . So not sure what happned .
my truck is manual 2024 . Its gearbox works fine and clutch too . Only 2 issues i have so far is 1 sometimes it does go into reverse easily i have to take clutch out and try again
2 with imt on sometimes on downshift or upshift . I feel vibration on clutch so now i dont use it .

I watched the video. I"m not making excuses for Toyota since the clutch should not have broke, but those guys didn't exactly impress me as someone who knows how to drive a standard.

@Sandeep1994 that is a good point about that truck not hitting redline, which definitely would have happened if he had gone into 1st gear.

How does the tranny stop you from going into first gear? I don't doubt what you said about the transmission not allowing that, since you are an owner. But I have never driven any manuals that stopped you from doing anything with the shifter, even stupid stuff.

It will not stop you from going into any gear. I have twice down shifted by accident in the 1700 miles on my 4G MT. First time was on the highway I accidentally went from 6th to 3rd it was dark and first couple hundred miles on truck. The truck redlined bounced off limiter for a millisecond before I went to a higher gear. The second time I went from 4th to 1st It was same redline bounce on rev limiter for an instant this time and I pull it out of 1st gear. Both times were low rpm and not excessive speeds. I got lucky that my poor downshifts did not cause any catastrophic damage. Scared the shit out me both times! I have in the process of becoming ”one” with my 4G MT have pretty much smoothed my transmission like river stone. Also I had the clutch at full disengagement both times the redline rev limiter was bouncing in way to low of a gear and engaged a proper gear for engine RPM both times before releasing clutch. In that video on YouTube those dumbfucks are doing that on purpose. The 24 Tacoma owners manual clearly states always shift sequentially.

Yep - sequential shifting is the smart move with any transmission, although I sometimes skip 3rd in my car when running up through the gears if I am already at speed. Luckily that will not damage anything if you mess that up.

The video I reference showed a couple of things that could contribute to this. One is that the spring loading positions the shifter to be naturally aligned with 3rd. When you pull back from 5th it is automatically lined up with 3rd. Just a slight push to the left aligns it with the 1st gear gate, which is pretty close. That could easily be what happened here.

I agree those guys were basically doing something wrong to better show the IMT in action for their video. The passenger said early in the video that his Dad was out of practice with a manual. To their credit they didn't deny that they could have screwed up, just said that they really didn't know exactly what happened.

The lesson is don't skip gears downshifting unless you want to pay to fix your screw up.
