On other Toyota vehicles I've owned, if you have ECO mode engaged, it ignores your environmental settings to save gas. Make sure ECO is off and see if that changes it.

Not that metal shards sounds like a good thing in an engine but I have to ask - won't the oil filter take care of that so it can't do any damage?

When they strap them down, they don't want the tires getting squashed flat and possibly damaged so they overinflate them. I've been told that this was more important when shipping vehicles overseas but I guess they do it for truck shipments too.
