I just bought a 24 SR5 and was stoked since ive wanted a tacoma for a long time. the first few weeks driving though I noticed that going form a stop through about third gear the shifts were all over the place and the car just didn't seem to accelerate smoothly either. I called and scheduled an appointment with the dealer but that night on my way home my dashboard lit uo like a Christmas tree showing checks engine light, "system malfunction" for both the pre-collision system and the cruise control AND the "drive-start control malfunction" errors. Had the car towed to the dealer, they've had it over a week and said it was just a faulty b1s1 O2 sensor but hasn't given me any reason why that would trip all those errors. Unfortunately my truck does fall under the TSB for the transmission issues as well so I am wondering if it could be that. If anyone can tell me if it really could just be the faulty 02 sensor or is the dealership trying to pull a fast one on me it would be much appreciated.

When the Drive Start Control Malfunction appears on your dashboard, it indicates that the Drive Start Control feature is not working. It is a safety that prevents unexpected acceleration and collision damage.

The entire dash will light up with stuff like that due to the grille shutter as well. Basically you have to pull the codes to actually figure out what is going on.

I would make them physically show you the codes cause drive train issues are a definite symptom of the transmission going out.

As someone who has worked on a bunch of toyotas, they do tend to light up like a christmas tree when the CEL comes on. Older toyotas would throw the CEL, VSC, and Traction Contol lights all at the same time if the CEL was triggered. I'd imagine these new ones would do something similar, so it's possible that the Upstream O2 Sensor could cause all those lights, since it would mess with the fuel trims.

Yes. I’ve never understood that. It drives me crazy that everything lights up when it’s something like an O2 sensor or some random misfire. Do all those systems actually go down?

I honestly don't think so. Like if the CEL is triggered by something like an O2 sensor and I go in with my scanner, I'll see fault codes in the PCM, but not the VSC or ABS modules even though the lights are on. Toyota computers are weird. lol
