Anyone purchase an extended warranty from the dealer when you picked up your 4G Tacoma? I got one against my better judgement when I purchased my 2G Tacoma (also new) over a decade ago although it did eventually end up paying for itself as the air conditioner compressor tanked just before I hit 80K miles. Just wondering what folks are doing nowadays particularly with all the electronic features.

Being a year 1, I opted to go for it. Like you pointed out, the electronics really up the chances of an issue down the road.

If I get one it wont be from my dealer unless he can match that guy that sells them direct. I think he is Jerry Johnson at Midwest Toyota.

They started a 7 yr/ 75000 warranty at $2699. I kept saying no and they kept lowering price. At $1299 , I took it because of this being a first year model.

Was that for a Toyota warranty or third party?

Toyota Warranty
My FI guy went on for what seemed like forever pitching some 3 party warranty until I just said I’m only interested in the OEM Toyota one. At least he admitted the dealer pushes them to sell the off brand one cause “it’s a better warranty “.

What he means to say is it has a better commission

I declined initially and they added 2 years and cut the cost a bit. So it was 8 years/80k total. I thought it was smart since it’s the first of a new gen with a ton of tech.

It's a first year of the new gen, plus purchasing the extended warranty actually gave me a slightly better rate with in house financing, wildly enough. Also, the dealer didn't try to upsell it on me, and didn't try to overcharge it.

I'm happy I got it personally, definitely some peace of mind.

That's the part that's irritating. If they can get you a better rate with the warranty, they could've given you that rate without. I'm probably going to extend as well, but that part is what really makes me angry.

If you want Toyota's

^^^This.

There are dealers around the country that sell Toyota Extra Care VSAs direct without exorbitant markup. Google or call around to get quotes and use it to negotiate in the finance office. If they won't budge on the price, decline the warranty and purchase it directly anytime within the 3yr/36k basic warranty.

I got a 10yr/100k Toyota Platinum $0 deductible warranty for my Mother's 2022 RAV4 for $1,360 from Troy Dietrich at Toyota Greenfield in Massachusetts. The local dealer wanted $3,500 for it. After some back and forth, the finance guy said he couldn't go less than cost $1,160 + 500, so we declined and purchased it from Troy.

I got it cheap without having to fight for it thankfully so the following doesn't really make a difference but my sales guy told me I could absolutely buy it at any point afterwards but I would loose the free how-ever-many services. If that was lies, I have no idea, something I just wanted to put out there.
