Definitely a glitch in the HU software/firmware. It usually fails on start up and a reboot/restart does the trick. Sometimes I can’t switch to the radio from CP. The non CP functions are often slow to respond. I have all the subscriptions offered. Keep expecting some update will fix it or break it worse.

Just did a 10 hour each way round trip and the CarPlay disconnected frequently. Up until now, I’d say it happened a few times a week, but on this trip, it happened at least 4-5 times each way. I can‘t detect any pattern. I tried pressing the picture of the phone to reconnect, and sometimes it would let me then toggle the CarPlay button and I’d be back in action, but usually it doesn’t. When this happens, I have to turn the truck off then back on, which is the only way I can get it to reset. Love the truck but the software is garbage. It was very frustrating when I was using google maps for navigation in an unknown city and it just up and quit working.
Apologies if this was covered already: Have you tried testing with with a cable into the side of the HU to rule out wireless?

Does anyone else have the issue where once a month the radio just randomly disconnects your phone from Carplay. I have to go back into the settings and turn carplay back on manually. No rhyme or reason to when it happens. Is there a software update for the truck.

I usually just restart my truck and then it connects.

I had constant CarPlay problems with my iPhone 14 Pro Max. I upgraded to the iPhone 16 and CarPlay has been rock solid ever since.

Press and hold the volume knob until you see the Toyota symbol appear (5-10 seconds). That essentially performs a cold reboot on the head unit and mimics you turning the vehicle off and on. Should help you recover from the disconnect while you’re still driving (does for me).
thanks for this tip. A little handier than stopping the truck killing the engine a few seconds then restarting.

it’s usually a minor inconvenience, but once or twice I need google maps via CarPlay and listening to a webinar, stop, get gas, get back in and no CarPlay and can’t reconnect. iPhone 14 Pro w/ 18.3.2

I think it may be something with the head unit's bluetooth. It isn't a Carplay thing because I am on Android Auto and having most of the same problems as people in this thread. For me at least, the problem also doesn't happen when I'm wired.

I haven't had many of these issues, but I wonder if it has to do with our phones being connected to the Toyota app to control the vehicle and car play at the same time. The one issue I did have was related to my VPN on my phone. Carplay does not work with a VPN connected.

Yes, absolutely. If I drive into a cell reception black hole it completely disconnects. The other times it's just random crashes. Had the dealer inspect it & of course nothing is wrong as they couldn't replicate the disconnects...

Mine will randomly disconnect my phone from apple carplay on car start (slider is turned off) and I have to go into the vehicle menus to turn it back on happens about every third day. On long trips I have the head unit go all white once (like a picture above) and turning it off and on at the knob did not work (had to restart the car power.) Have had it lock up on carplay where the screen is there, but obviously nothign is happening, button on and off fixed it.

Thanks. I’ve tried that in the past and it continued to disconnect, but that was before a software update on the phone. I appreciate the reminder, because that sort of fell out of my (admittedly feeble) memory.

This sounds like a Bluetooth issue with the phone. I have a GM piece of S*** and it does it all the time with CarPlay.

Counterpoint: in 6000 miles and 2.5 months of ownership, I’ve not had one instance of unintended disconnection. Pretty pleased with how my iPhone works with the head unit.
