2024 TRD Sport I-Force Max 4x4 with a little over 700 miles so far. Mine has been super smooth with just a few exceptions. I've noticed a slight rumble strip vibration a few times when it shifts from first to second under low throttle. It wouldn't be as noticeable if it wasn't for the fact that the transmission is so smooth the rest of the time. It's very intermittent and I can't replicate it on-demand, but I'll still mention it at my first service and see what they say. Otherwise this thing is just smooth.
Yup! Mine does that so bad sometimes the whole truck starts vibrating and shaking but most of the time it’s very minor

Most of my bad shifts are subtle and not something a passenger would notice. My wife asked me to point one out because it seemed fine to her. That wasn't the case for the shifts into reverse - she asked what the hell just happened. If I had gotten out of truck and found transmission parts on the ground it wouldn't have been a surprise. It is hard to imagine that any transmission could ever shift like that and not have some serious problems.
I can’t wait to find out the reasoning behind all the inconsistencies from truck to truck, but as the days go on I’m realizing I’m probably stuck with a piece of absolute shit transmission and truck

Thank you for the reply. A few follow up questions for you:

1. How bad is your 2 to 1 downshift when stopping/can you please describe it in more detail?
2. Can you replicate it?
3. Is it only when you brake lightly, like when you're coming to a slow, slow stop?

Thank you for your time.
Mine does that occasionally almost feels like it downshifts then decides to up shift right before the truck stops and occasionally the rumble strip vibration as well

I would be having another dealership look at this…its been happening to you for awhile , its absurd toyota could expect you to accept this with brand new truck, no results there i would be contacting my state attorney general

Glad I'm not this only one. Love this truck. But despise the way to transmission shifts.

I'd say like gears 5-8 are very very smooth. Can hardly feel those shifts.

But 1-4 can be so annoying. The 1-2 shifts shakes the truck pretty rough. ESPECIALLY in the morning when cold. The 4-3 downshift (i think) makes a loud audible clunk. And the truck after about 40 mph will try to hold a high gear at about 1200 rpm.. and once you give it gas is stutters/vibrates the truck/gas pedal/ driver seat. Feels awful.

For a brand new truck i think it's ridiculous.

Yep - the transmission is the only thing I don't like about my truck too @radbrad.

I get some rough shifts and some terrible shifts, but just randomly, so I can't demonstrate it for my dealer. Some shifts into reverse sound like the transmission exploded. I can't believe that Toyota is ignoring expensive new trucks with 3rd world shift quality and just pretending that it isn't happening. So many people report this that I think it must be a design problem and Toyota is hoping we will buy the story that it is normal.

Mine had the harsh Park/Reverse/Drive clunk for about the first 1500 miles or so, but that went away. In the 6 months I've owned it, I've had probably 3 or 4 instances where it shifted up and down through the gears really hard like a teenager learning to drive stick.

I've got 4500 miles on it so far and it seems to be alright. My VIN isn't part of the current transmission TSB, so that makes me feel better about it.

My biggest annoyance is that it has a really irritating shift pattern when making a turn from a stop light or pulling into traffic. It's like it will immediately shift into 2nd, then as I give it gas to come out of the turn, it will downshift right back to 1st, then again back up into 2nd and onward... so you get this really quick 1-2-1-2 dance that drives me insane. I really hope it's just a case of poor shift logic and not an indicator of a future issue. I figure it is just the logic because I can't reproduce it when taking off in a straight line.

With talk of these failed automatic transmissions and much confusion amongst the internet im really curious to hear how everyone’s transmission behaves. Describe your expierence, are your shifts always really smooth, are they always really hard, sometimes hard shifting, do you find the transmission to occasionally be clunky? If you have had your transmission fail please give detailed information on the symptoms leading up to the failure and the failure itself. Mileage and manufacturing date would be helpful as well to gaining a better understanding of what’s going on. I’ll start by saying my truck was built March of 2024, after 650 miles I have most of the time gotten a 1-2 “hard” shift first thing in the morning, and occasionally a rougher shift here and there while driving, most of the time the trans is smooth but in traffic I do find it to be occasionally a little “clunky” . Thanks for those who respond and participate
I also have the harsh 1-2 shift when cold and is duplicatable!

Yes, at times a very harsh reverse engagement.

I think we all need to get together and present our findings to Toyota Corporate. I have submitted a claim for investigation to NHTSA for the creeping issue a couple of days ago as it is a safety issue.

If you felt my truck shuddering and vibrating at slow speeds cruising around a parking lot you’d laugh, it’s so pathetic it’s sad that this is a brand new Toyota truck
