Look at the torque of the 4 cyl!

DYNO RESULTS:

2018 Tacoma TRD Off-Road 4x4 - 31" Tire
  • 241 WHP
  • 238 LB-FT Torque
2024 Tacoma TRD Off-Road 4x4 - 265/70R17 32" Tire
  • 267 WHP
  • 306 LB-FT Torque

Given the 1" tire difference the results are even a little skewed in favor of the 3rd gen. They are also in Colorado so the high elevation means lower numbers for both.

Nice. I can tell just driving the 4G that is has more power than my tuned NA 3.5 had.
Dyno that puppy! Any plans to? Curious to see results closer to sea level.

No plans at this point. Our local dyno keeps pretty busy, so we'd have to schedule months in advance.

Just reaffirms my belief on how much better the 4th gen is over the 3rd gen. The poor seating and inefficient V6 of the 3rd gen made it so it was never a consideration to me in the last 20 years.

They’re two totally different beasts.

Hey Lando, I'm also in BC. Have you heard any allocations for BC yet? My dealer said it will be around March or April.

Wow first off these guys aren't far from me so cool to see this! Second that means these 4Gs are pretty efficient if factory is giving us 278 and 317. Most the time that number is at the crank not the wheel! Super stoked for my hybrid to get here now!

With the different transmission I wonder if they dyno tested at the same overall gear ratio. You would have to pick the correct gear on the new 8 speed in order for it to be a fair test.

Yes, Granville Toyota is saying end of March for the first demo model. It was moved from end date of January to end of February and now it’s on hold for something at the rail yard.

Those are impressive numbers. Figure in the standard 15 percent driveline loss from crankshaft to wheels, and the 2024 puts out 310 to 315 horsepower at the crank.

Altitude isn’t much of a factor with turbocharged engines. By their very nature they correct for atmospheric density variances.

Even more impressive is the flat power peak and wide range — maximum horsepower occurs around 5000 rpm, and doesn’t fall off the cliff until about 6200. That’s a really usable, very linear powerband overall.

Toyota sandbagged their output numbers more than a little. Good for them. The Germans do it all the time. Guess Toyota decided to follow suit. Thank you, Akido — already miss you.

Those are some healthy numbers, especially compared to what Toyota is advertising at the crank. What confuses me though is that Toyota advertises peak torque from 1700rpm through 3500rpm while this shows it building up to a peak at 4000rpm. I've never dyno'd a vehicle before so maybe that is just a function of the technique they use and at what RPM they started the pull?
