At the moment I own both a Honda and my Taco. I was loyal to Honda for years, but I now suspect that loyalty has reached it’s limit for the following reasons…
Each year Honda has fewer models with manual transmissions and each generation of cars regardless of transmission looks more bland. I get it, a lot of people prefer an automatic. For those who don’t want an automatic, Honda was a good option. Reliable, small, light weight cars that were fun to drive. People might say that Honda still has some manual cars (Civic Si and Type R) but there is a big issue in that it is extremely difficult to get any of the manual Honda’s. Want an Si? Sure, but you can have it in only 1 of 3 colours. Want a Type R lol… wait 4+ years. They are making generic, soulless cars, with basically no colour options apart from black, grey, and white. For those who say that it is all about consumer demand I disagree. If cars were priced appropriately (based on the actual cost of a manual vs. automatic transmission) I am certain that more people would buy manual cars. 20-30 years ago if you wanted an automatic you had to pay more. Now-a-days a manual and auto cost the same amount which makes no sense considering how an auto is far more complicated than a manual. I'm curious how much more an automatic costs to design, and build compared to a manual transmission. Honda is purposely driving people away from the manual transmission; they price it at the same price as an auto and if you want one of the manual transmission cars you can’t get it.
Toyota still has a fair number of models with manual transmissions and they are Honda’s peer.
When I found out that the new Prelude will not have a manual I lost hope. Why on earth would I buy a glorified golf cart at this point?
I enjoy driving my Tacoma. It’s a bit slow compared to a small Honda, but it has character, a stick shift, and is very customizable. On top of this I had the choice of some actual colours rather than just grey, white, and black. I applaud Toyota for sticking manual transmissions in their cars and actually making cars with unique styling unlike Honda.
I wanted to voice my appreciation to Toyota for the line up of cars they have (despite the hate they are getting these days with some reliability matters). I hope that somehow the people at Toyota realize their efforts are appreciated.
