Your filter will NOT filter out all the metal in the engine. Total metal count, oxidation value, and partical size etc are done through oil analysis. Until you do this and learn, you'll only learn through tribal knowledge.

Metal shavings should be captured by the filter, and yes, metal shavings are an issue, but the break down of the oil due to heat is the reason for changing oil at 5000 miles, or 6 months.

Drive it like you stole it. In all honestly, there's nothing special you need to do, but I wouldn't baby it either. That said, early and often oil changes in an engines life will help flush the garbage out. It's clear, to me, that the manufacturer's are not flushing their blocks as well as I'd personally like.

Strongly disagree with taking it easy on the new engine. No towing for sure, however, you must seat the piston rings and you have only one shot at doing it correctly. The rings must be push out to the cylinder walls. This can only happen under load such as a dyno simulation. Cylinder pressure must be increased. Get your oil analysis done. Speed diagnostics is a great start to use data to determine break in and not opinions. Use Toyota oil until broke in which can take up to 10k miles monitoring total ware metals, and partical size. Oxidation value you will see just how good or bad the oil is performing. Switch to Driven DI 20 after data says the engine is broke in. Learn all you can and quickly about your lubrication program. Much has been written on this topic here. Check out the motor oil geek on YouTube. If you're not trying to get all you can out of this truck just do as the masses do and follow the owners manual.

I agree with you in whole heartedly! This has been my understanding for years and what I've always followed. I dont want a weak engine. With that said, I'll usually take my new vehicles into the mountains, and load up on down hill with lower gearing forcing the engine to rev and allow that engine breaking to help with that ring to ringland-to-wall relationship. Nonetheless there's a lot of data behind this if you are to do your research. Weak engines will die early, and also allow for blow-by among everything else that kills an engine before it's time.

In the end, listen to everyone, choose what you want to do, and stick to it.

Ask 20 people that question, get 20 answers, none of them entirely wrong.

If you do read the manual, it also says to make sure you let the turbo cool down by idling for a minute before shutting the truck off if just finished going up hills or towing. The manual is very informative. It will never hurt to change the oil, so do it as often as you feel matches your perfection seeker level. On race engines, yeah, we would run it up gradually after a rebuild to heat cycle, seat the rings, and get the metal out, using cheap oil to wear it in and change it out a few times during the process. But, that's done at the factory, and with the coatings and materials advancements that have been around for 2 decades now, it's much less critical. What you're also doing during break in, is working out the assembly lube so everything seats correctly. Gradual increases in load over the 1k miles, varying it as much as possible is the best way to get there.
