To put things in perspective, if we were to get 23 MPG which no one would complain about vs. the 19 average most are getting, and paying $3 USD per gallon, over the course of driving 12k miles per year we would save $350. I don’t want to throw away $350 at once but over the course of a year I could live with it given everything else I love about the truck including the added pep over my Gen 3 that got the same 19 MPG.
I agree this is how I look at the cost of ownership. Over a year the amount of extra fuel is nominal compared to the performance of the truck. Like others have stated I wish at least Toyota would have left the gas tank the same size as before. I just grin and bare it.

Outside of obvious degraders of mpg (i.e. lift kit)...fitting a tire for looks and disregarding the ply/weight will have a huge impact on mileage. When I replace my tires, I'll do everything possible to not go above a SL rated tire. Tire weight is super important. No tacoma needs 10 ply tires. Of course there aren't many SL options currently...but there are some (Wildpeak AT3/AT4). And BFG is supposed to be releasing non LT versions on the K03 within this year. Fingers crossed

I read with interest the replies to my original post. First, I need to add that I immediately replaced the more aggressive stock tires with Michelin Defender LTX tires which are much more highway friendly, and I did not start driving for any real distances until I had a cab high shell installed -- which is exactly what I did for all my previous 3 Tacomas. Furthermore, living in WY I am well aware of what the wind can do to mileage; and, I am a conservative driver and don't drive my new 2025 any different than I did my previous models. But the gas mileage absolutely stinks and I purchased a new Tacoma to have a pick-up that meets my work and daily life needs but is more economical in mileage. I might as well be driving a one-ton monster with the mileage I'm currently getting! Something is wrong and I will be taking it back to the dealer to have it checked out!

Sorry, you are wrong about the 10 ply tires. I use my truck for field work and was sick of having tires ruined by sharp rocks -- I will never use any tires that are not 10 ply and have had good mileage results from Michelin 10 ply tires that are also highway friendly.

I'm running 33x12 r20 tires on my trd offroad I get around the same 16.5 mpg on average. I use to run eco mode all the time but the way I drive it's not annoying and doesn't get me but maybe .3 mpg better so I stopped. Headed to work if it stay 55 and there's no traffic i can get like 20-22 mpg on that trip but it's few and far between

Thank you.

I'm using stock-sized 17 inch tires. What's really troubling to me is the gas mileage rates used as a selling point for Tacoma trucks if far from the reality of what I'm getting. And, my 2017 routinely got 19-22 and sometimes up to 24 and 25 mpg. Of course it also got worse milage under snowy road and wind conditoins, but I'm pretty sure I have never reached the low levels I'm getting out of my 2025 copy (and under favorable road conditions). Does anyone know if there is a break-in period for these new Tacomas?

I am only at 2k miles, but my mileage continues to improve. Just today I got 20.4 mpg for a mostly freeway drive of 25 miles. Last week the same drive got my 19.7 mpg. My mileage also made a noticeable improvement when I installed a tonneau.
I drive a 2024 hybrid OR in Idaho. My average daily driving is about 30 miles both ways to and from work plus regular driving on weekends for errands or sports. Got around 1400 miles on my Taco and my average is 19.5 MPG. Notice that my driving in the early hours in the morning with no traffic when colder the average is right now 18.8 mpg and on my way back with more traffic but warmer is between 23-24 mpg. Mileage per gallon is improving after the break in period . I drove a 2019 and a 2022 Tacomas OR and vs driving this 4rd generation is like day and night, engine and transmission performance + all the new technology improvements, interior and exterior design makes me like a lot of this new gen owners a very happy one. The only similarities with the old 3rd generation is the solid Toyota Tacoma feel. Greetings!

Are you on the Michelin LTX AT2?

Heavy 33s and a heavy foot. Mostly highway driving but the traffic is horrible during my highway drives. A lot of people with inconsistent gas pedals so constantly going from 90kph to 120kph over and over again. Turbo is constantly spooling in this truck lol.

My city doesn't plow either so the times I am driving in town I'm sure trying to track through snow doesn't help the milage.

I'll get 16-17 for a couple months but it'll slowly average again to 18, god forbid if I got to tow anything lol.
