I got 22 mpg on the highway out of my 2021 GMC Sierra AT4. 6.2 liter, 420 hp, 10 speed transmission with DoD, and it got great mileage on the highway. This truck, much lighter, 1/2 the engine size, 2 fewer gears in the transmission, and I get 4-5 mpg WORSE than that full size truck. The sierra had a higher payload, greater towing, much much larger interior, etc. I consider 22 mpg amazing mpg in a truck. It's not 30+ like I got in a rental camry or more you can get in a prius, but for a truck GMC did it right with how they maximized mpg when cruising on the highway. I don't see why toyota is so much worse when highway driving. It's a pickup truck. It's literally a heavy brick on wheels. It is not designed to maximize MPG. Better MPG Is nice but You can't have a vehicle that is capable of truck towing and truck utility and expect amazing MPG. At this point in time it is impossible.
Go look at a Prius. Drive it. Look at the shapes of it, the clearance, the amount it can tow. Then drive it and see how it feels. A Prius Is way more geared towards MPG but is a completely different vehicle with a lot less capabilities. You cannot have your cake and eat it too.
