Has anyone experienced remote starting there vehicle with the app (for AC on hot days), you leave the grocery store and open the tailgate to put items in the back, the engine shuts off?

Not for groceries but yes I had it happen this weekend. It makes no sense BUT previous Toyotas I have owned (5) turned off when you open ANY door so while it is annoying at least they have "fixed" the door opening nonsense.

Is there any justification for this from a safety perspective? Like if people are near the truck (as indicated by the door opening), it shuts off automatically to avoid any risk of movement or driving unattended? Can't imagine how, but I suspect there's some reasonable rationale for it.

All, I found the workaround.

You need to "Unlock" the truck from the remote first. Then you can open the tailgate without the engine shutting off.

The engine only shuts off if the doors are still locked and you attempt to open the tailgate.
