So does the Toyota app that costs $15 work as a "find my truck" if stolen ?

DON'T PAY EXTRA FOR IT! It's included! Safety Connect, which is provided for free for up to 10 years, includes GPS location if stolen. Per the App:

If you're involved in an accident, your vehicle is stolen, or the unexpected occurs, Safety Connect is here to help and send assistance directly to your vehicle's GPS location, if you need it.*

* Up to 10-years, 4G Network Dependent (I take this to mean that as long as 4G cell service is available where the vehicle is located, it should work.)

I let my Insurance Company know and receive a discount for vehicle location service.

Now, who exactly they send if it's stolen remains to be seen! Hopefully it's Law Enforcement and not a Mechanic!
I think at the end of the day, anybody willing to pay Toyota $15/mo for their goon app, they're doing so for remote start and lock/unlock capability. nice to know you can get an insurance discount though.

I don't think you need the app for Safety Connect. In the event of an accident, it will notify Toyota and relay the location. In the event of a theft, you'd just need to contact Toyota, notify them of the theft and ask that they relay the location to the Police. This service is good for 10 years, so it's nice to know it's included and doesn't require a monthly fee.

If I were to pay for one of the services, it would probably be the Drive Connect for the Cloud Navigation that provides real time traffic rerouting. But, with Waze, Google Maps, I'm not convinced it's even with the $15 monthly fee! We are retired, so don't park it at work anymore. It pretty much stays in the garage if we aren't out and about. We live in Florida, so I don't have a need for remote start or lock/unlock! I have a remote that will perform those functions if needed.

Nope, not worth it. Disabled all of my connected services in the dealership parking lot the day I bought.

I'm not (willingly) paying to give my driving telematics to Toyota (and my insurance company).
My understanding is that even if you don't pay for the app they still collect your telematics. I asked about this at the dealership where I got my Tacoma.

It's not going to work once the thief disconnects the antennas. Just saying I wouldn't count on this.

Multiple air tags if you're really concerned. Fuel cut hidden GPS. You can go way down the rabbit hole on this.

any way
as a point of interest story,
i had some wrap work done on my truck , guy kept it all weekend I could tell exactly when he worked on the truck as i would get multiple alerts of door window down , door unlocked & so on
So I call him asking how the wrap is going ,middle of the day he tells me he working it right then .I can tell he is lying to me as the app says different. App shows all locked up (cause I locked it )
yeah the wrap wasn't the best & his lies made me check up on my truck with a drive by . Seems he was training high schoolers in wrapping in the middle of the night
the app showed exactly where it was last parked on a map the next morning
as I have 6 months left on free period I still am on the fence if i pay $15 per month šŸ•ŗfee

While Toyota seems to be bundling at $15/month ($180/yr), I think if you dig a little there is a "remote connection" module for $8/month ($80/yr) that has remote start, lock/unlock, locate, status. I'm at the age where I like my car warm in the winter (and less frequently cooled in the summer), and the occasional lock when I forget. So for $80, I like the features (as does my wife on her RAV4).

People who scoff at the subscription aren’t realizing that the app features rely on 4G connectivity. Toyota isn’t going to pay AT&T for that in perpetuity

My year trial is up in 10 days... For sure I will be using in the winter time but may let it lapse this summer... I can't seem to find an $8 dollar a month deal... But I did notice you can either get just the $15 drive connect/remote app or you can get the remote app/with music? Witch may make it worth a little extra but also I have not tried their streaming service either... Key fob start is very short and not consistent
