The manual transmission has a longer shifter on the 2024 Tacoma -- here's why

Of course now I can't unsee the longer shifter . Didn't even notice it before.

Now, only the non-hybrid variant can be equipped with the six-speed manual. And because the new engine had to be mated to Toyota's six-speed gearbox, the automaker had to do some tweaking to make things fit, including adding a long shifter. According to Tacoma Chief Engineer Sheldon Brown, that extra length and longer throw is the secret sauce that prompted the look of the shift boot.​

"The shift lever is a little bit longer throw because the 6MT made it to the new L4 turbo," Tacoma chief engineer Sheldon Brown told The Drive.​

"We had to change, of course, the bell housing and so the mechanical attachment to where that goes to the transmission is a little bit longer. We have just a little bit longer throw, so, therefore, we had a little bit longer shift lever and the boot is just there to match that."​

Don't care much about the looks of it, only that it shifts smoothly and doesn't have a sloppy disconnected feel. From the videos of the Pro it seems like reviewers were happy with it overall.

I also personally prefer a longer throw in trucks vs "cars"

That makes no sense. The crank center line doesn't change because its a 4 instead of a V6, and neither does the plane at which the engine and trans meet. What DID change is the H-point vs the floor, which in turn means driver position vs the drivetrain.
Brown did mention that they changed the 1st and 2nd gear ratios (to deal with the lower idle torque). The (diesel) Hilux uses a 4.78/2.42 1st/2nd gear set, so fingers crossed that its close to those ratios.

Two reviewers say it has a rubbery feeling. Being a Taco, I'm quite sure the aftermarket will step up with better bushings at least.

It’sa Japanese 4cyl truck that’s designed in California and made in Mexico.. yeah it’s gonna be squishy and not shift as well as grandma’s Porsche
