If you’re up to speed on the TFL truck that broke and what the issue was, this seems to be the same thing. See video, at about 30 seconds you can see my front wheels lose power and hear what I believe to be the ADD break. I’m going in for a “diagnostic” appointment at Toyota tomorrow… which means laying on the frozen ground to remove skid plates tonight.

I went through the obstacle the other direction- started in 4HI, moved to 4LO, then had to lock diff to get out. On the return, I was in 4LO with locked diff and MTS deep snow from the start. Neither rear wheel had traction, and front wheels were both on icy snow.

After getting out (pulled out), I identified the issue fairly quickly since the truck looked and ran fine with the exception of 4wd. Computer would switch into 4HI/LO with no issue, and I could hear the electronic whir, but no engagement.

I’m going in first thing tomorrow morning- this should be covered by warranty. If anyone has dealt with Toyota and their diagnostic/warranty side, I’d love to hear your experience and any tips/precautions. As stated I’m planning to remove my RCI skid plates (engine through transfer case) since I’ve seen so many horror stories about having Toyota do it.

I can't speak about your problem but as far as Toyota warranty/diagnostic it all depends on the dealer. I had a screaming rear end on my brand new 24 tacoma. My dealer basically told me to F off. It took me a call to Toyota corporate who set an appointment at another dealer before I finally got a differential replacement.

If i remember... i saw a video where the "lead engineer" guy, whos in all the youtube videos, stated that the TFL break was a Software issue, which im finding a bit hard to imagine.

He stated there is a sacrificial shear point in there, and they were working on a new algorithm or something, so it wont put the power down so hard, i believe?

Might want to look for that video, if you havent already.

Yes! It is odd and shouldn’t happen, but the software part does make sense. Rear wheels spinning so ABS clamps down sending torque to front, one of those wheels spins so abs clamps down sending all torque to one front wheel which makes the ADD piece snap. Still, I wasn’t exactly “sending it” lol

Some people here seem to be scared of telling the dealers/lawyers/corporate to go f*** themselves and this is a problem and it shouldn't have happened. So instead they tell people to cower and tuck their tale and hide any evidence of what happened.

Has nothing to do with tuck and run or whatever, its simple math and Toyota has more to fight than any normal person, don't run and hide get your repair covered and then have at it, the replaced of that diff is not going to be cheap so why risk a fight? but like I said do whatever does you good, it's an opinion on a forum take it for what it's worth or not worth, it does not affect me in the slightest.
No I think you make a fair point. I’d rather get my truck taken care of than stick it to the man. It’s too bad it is that as consumers we fear Toyota scouring the internet for an excuse to not cover what has been deemed a defect by their chief engineer, but I just want my truck to work it’s going to snow in a few days lol

Looks identical to the “extremely rare” break TFL had. I would go find Sheldon Brown’s exact words and document everything for your file.

I don't see any reason to hide that video @Adam. That was pretty tame stuff for a Taco and I can't see that you did anything wrong. I have only ever seen Toyota deny warranty coverage for something that was clearly abuse. Your video shows exactly the opposite. Some dealers might give you a run around, but that is just the nature of the business.

I'll be interested to hear how this goes.

Ouch, looks just like the TFL failure to be honest. I hope they take care of you and you do not have to fight them too much to get it fixed under warranty.

For your records, see the video with Sheldon Brown, Toyota Chief Engineer, at

You can probably skip to the 3:30 mark. The rare remark is just after the 7 minute mark.
