BROKE MY TRUCK (ADD? Same issue as TFL?)

Yes! It is odd and shouldn’t happen, but the software part does make sense. Rear wheels spinning so ABS clamps down sending torque to front, one of those wheels spins so abs clamps down sending all torque to one front wheel which makes the ADD piece snap. Still, I wasn’t exactly “sending it” lol

Looks identical to the “extremely rare” break TFL had. I would go find Sheldon Brown’s exact words and document everything for your file.

I don't see any reason to hide that video @Adam. That was pretty tame stuff for a Taco and I can't see that you did anything wrong. I have only ever seen Toyota deny warranty coverage for something that was clearly abuse. Your video shows exactly the opposite. Some dealers might give you a run around, but that is just the nature of the business.

I'll be interested to hear how this goes.

Ouch, looks just like the TFL failure to be honest. I hope they take care of you and you do not have to fight them too much to get it fixed under warranty.

If you’re up to speed on the TFL truck that broke and what the issue was, this seems to be the same thing. See video, at about 30 seconds you can see my front wheels lose power and hear what I believe to be the ADD break. I’m going in for a “diagnostic” appointment at Toyota tomorrow… which means laying on the frozen ground to remove skid plates tonight.

I went through the obstacle the other direction- started in 4HI, moved to 4LO, then had to lock diff to get out. On the return, I was in 4LO with locked diff and MTS deep snow from the start. Neither rear wheel had traction, and front wheels were both on icy snow.

After getting out (pulled out), I identified the issue fairly quickly since the truck looked and ran fine with the exception of 4wd. Computer would switch into 4HI/LO with no issue, and I could hear the electronic whir, but no engagement.

I’m going in first thing tomorrow morning- this should be covered by warranty. If anyone has dealt with Toyota and their diagnostic/warranty side, I’d love to hear your experience and any tips/precautions. As stated I’m planning to remove my RCI skid plates (engine through transfer case) since I’ve seen so many horror stories about having Toyota do it.

What is the build date? Can’t remember where but someone said the ADD fix was software that was quickly updated to the factory builds but was delayed to those in the wild, and often missed unless you ask the service to check for the specific update?

Interesting. So a lot of us could be driving trucks that might have this problem. It seems like Toyota should make this a recall for the trucks that left the factory without that fix.

I personally would not take it down.. The video shows normal truck stuff vs smashing it up rock faces. I think it proves that it was a truck issue vs abuse. leaving it up if Toyota denies your claim would look pretty bad for them too on a popular forum. I would be surprised if they don't take care of you and put you in a rental as with the tranny issues. I'm pretty sure that the Tundra guys with their blown engines are pretty well taken care of too. Keep us updated.
