I have been using Google maps for years since my prior truck did not have a native map program like my Gen 4 Sport. Two questions. What does everyone think about how the native system compares to Google and Apple when transmitted over Carplay. Also I noticed that when I select the Nav option on the display in front of the steering wheel, it displays the next turn when using Apple or the native system, but with Google it just shows the compass. What Nav system is everyone using? One quick note, I was having connection issues with Carplay dropping out when I purchased the truck in October and have also followed the thread on this here. It seems there must have been a software update because the problem has completely stopped and it now works perfectly.

Google maps does everything I need it to. Other than that I used OnX when I was out west hunting without cell reception.

Not paying for a subscription to a GPS when I have it on my phone for free (minus OnX for reasons above).

Does the onboard nav work in these even if you don’t pay the subscription? I’ve always liked it because even if it’s not up to the minute up to date, it’ll generally get you there in areas where you don’t have cell reception. I’ve been reading though that more onboard nav systems now don’t work at all if you don’t subscribe. I’m not one to use car play, but at least that doesn’t cost an additional sub.

Nope, gotta pay to play. I guess you could use the trial for a year, but you're also opting in for data sharing as well.

Living in the city Google works so much better in my mind. With the big screen I can see al the backups on my local roads at a glance. Plus it gives wreck and speed trap heads ups.

do any other apps (waze, google maps, etc) show up on the HUD with turn by turn? (like Maps and Toyotas proprietary navigation apps do)

The native system also shows traffics issues like Maps. Google Maps and the built in GPS (plus subscription) work very similar. I cannot confirm Apple Maps

Only your phone's 1st party maps app will show up in the HUD with turn by turn. So if you have an iPhone then Apple Maps will show turn by turn, if you have an Android phone then Google Maps should show turn by turn. I used to keep the Compass/Navigation set off to either the right or left gauge, but I've now got it where if I keep the Adaptive Cruise in the center, turn-by-turn directions will pop up over that as needed, which is a nice indicator so I don't miss a turn..

Great suggestion, I am going to try this.

The onboard nav is just google with extra steps and a worse interface and blurs the top 5th of the screen. Requires a connection so you cant even use it when you are offline.

Why would anyone pay for this when they could just use their phone?
