So far I'm very happy with my DIY/prototype center channel speaker and will be building a second, cleaner looking revision this week. Note: I'm using a Beat-Sonic ENA-2T3 so I'm getting additional amplification on what I believe to be all speakers/channels.

In summary I'd say the sound is pretty darn linear from left A-pillar to right.. meaning nothing imbalanced + canny-sounding in the center..

I've recorded audio of the following 3 scenarios:
1) JBL System with center channel/BT speaker connected
2) JBL System with center channel/BT speaker disconnected
3) JBL System with my DIY v1 prototype [hack speaker] installed

x

Here's my original video from my previous post on lowering the center channel level [which I won't be doing as I still feel the doors sound different with the JBL center docked]:

Parts Used:

1) Non-JBL speaker cover which would be cut to hold replacement speaker(s)
Dash Cover - OEM Toyota Part No.: 55474-AK010

2) Replacement speaker(s) - EG 1 or 2 JBL Club 34F, Pioneer TS-A709/879 etc
Pioneer TS-A709: https://a.co/d/0wTkOEF

3) Speaker cover (black nylon else one/two 3" or one 4" speaker covers)

Optional: Beat-Sonic ENA-2T3
Used to increase amplification to all channels, allowing me to rebalance two positions rearward resulting in a fuller soundscape/soundstage and better overall audio fidelity at higher levels.

So, do you have to permanently remove the mounting plate for the removable speaker?

Yes, I removed the JBL dock.. completely. Resulting in 3 pieces removed:
1) Speaker
2) Dock surround/top trim
3) Dock

Details:
There's a surround trim piece that pops up (by hand) to give access to 2x 10mm bolts at the front/button side of the dock. Also 2x 10mm at rear of dock (accessible with/without trim removed).

I had already yanked the 4x 10mm bolts out in my second video... which is the first in the above post. I've just edited the post to include my original post and also video which covers the JBL dock a bit more.

Yeah - I agree with @SnowmanJPS - fab some for us to buy - even those of us stuck in the land to your south would go for those. You know, just a gift from a friend up north that I like so much that I sent you some money as a gift. lol

What if you run a single 4" or 4x6" speaker in that location? Do you think that would work?
Ya I misspoke in the video and said something to the effect of a single center channel - intending a single driver as another option. A single 3 1/2 - 4" would absolutely work as well.

I don't own the diagnostics tools necessary to determine what the frequency range is on the provided amplified channel but fairly certain the folks over at TacoTunes have already confirmed active crossovers on all the amplified channels coming out of the JBL amp. EG: Don't get something big expecting a lot of bass..

EDIT: 4" likely the largest top/bottom depending on the outer mounting enclosure which adds at least another inch .. wider fine:
