2025 Tacoma TRD Sport 4x4
Hi,

So I have a 2025 Tacoma TRD Sport 4x4 with nothing but the 14" screen, heated seats, and some dealer accessories. I got a decent deal on it on a lease, and the payoff amount is about equal to MSRP minus what I put down on the lease, but I know I probably could have gotten a slightly better deal.

However, my same dealer called me yesterday and asked me about the new 4Runner and if I was interested in getting it at MSRP, which I politely declined. However, he floated the idea around that they have a Tacoma with the i-FORCE MAX engine in Off Road, with the upgrade package, and that he could try to "get me out of my lease and into this one for the same monthly payments". It sounded WAY too good to be true, but I came down today and entertained the idea. Of course, I drove it and it was great, but obviously, when we tried to get this 55k MSRP truck for the same price as my 47k model, it didn't work out. The lowest they would get me down to was a $580 a month payment with $1300 down.

After doing a bit of math, I realized that despite not getting close to my $369 payment and $0 down lol, this was a pretty huge upgrade. I would go from the TRD Sport 4x4 that's essentially a base to an OR with the upgrade package and a sunroof, as well as a few other features. I called around a few other dealers, and I found one with a few more 2024s and they said they could match that $580/mo and $1300 down with even more wiggle room but "I need to come in". However, I also saw that they had a TRD OR Premium without the hybrid powertrain, but with Premium package, and was a few thousand cheaper. I'm assuming that if they could potentially match my 580/mo and $1300, that they could go even lower since this one had an MSRP that was $3000 lower.

I honestly love my TRD Sport now but after my dealer called me to try to make a deal on their unsold 2024s, it's got me addicted to the idea of an upgrade. My dad has been looking for a Tacoma as well and he would be more than happy to upgrade to one if I make a deal, whether he takes my "old" 2025 or gets the new 2024, so I wouldn't be sideways considering I have a two month lease already.

TLDR: Any thoughts on a TRD OR Premium or a TRD OR Hybrid with the Upgrade Package? Or should I stop being a crazy idiot and keep my truck lol.

Just roll with what you got bc itā€™s a lease. When itā€™s up I say buy a hybrid out right. Iā€™ve had mine with the premium package now for 6 months/5k now and I absolutely love everything about it. The hybrid is actually the main reason why I made this purchase. It felt just overall 1000 times better than my previous 3 tacos. I drove the I-force and was very impressed but that wasnā€™t what sold me on buying the 4th gen. It was the hybrid.

Will if your leasing then you are not concerned with long term ownership so itā€™s purely a decision based on how you wheel and do you want the torque.

If you owned, I would tell them they can keep that hybrid as you will need to replace the battery at least once if your someone who holds onto their vehicles.

Iā€™m in your exact shoes except I financed mine, I bought my TRD off-road with only the the upgraded screen for 42k and when I went back to get my truck serviced I found one of their premiums on the lot for 47k and a lower APY. I talked to them and they said theyā€™d buy back my truck then I can use that money as the down payment for the new one. They also have a hybrid on the way that Iā€™m going to look at once it comes in. But I get that feeling of wishing you got a little more, I definitely didnā€™t realize how nice dual climate was before I lost it

I bought a non-hybrid OR Premium after having a deal set for a TDR OR hybrid with the upgrade package. I wanted less mechanical complexity and more day to day comfort, which the premium offers. I also wanted the underseat storage. Back to back, I didnā€™t feel like the hybrid offered much in terms of mpg or even power. So, I spent the hybrid upcharge on a premium. No ragrets. šŸ˜œ

I probably can't help much not knowing your actual vehicle needs and finances.

In my case long bed and electric locker were musts. I didn't need any more than the mid level powertrain's torque. Payback for hybrid slight MPG increase didn't look like it could happen.

No leasing or loans made any sense against getting the vehicle at a discount. It was pretty easy to net about $4500 over some dealer offers. That was from the discount and dealer with best trade offer for the 2015 Toyota I replaced.

Mostly, no financing has ever made sense with the 5 Toyotas we've bought because of the resale and reliability combined with negotiating good deals. One exceptions was a time when it was easy to earn more than the loan rate.

Tacoma hybrids are too new to really know how long the batteries will last. But I do know that most Prius batteries are lasting far longer than the warranty, sometimes by a factor of 2 or even 3 times.

Im happy i chose the TRD Offroad, Hybridā€¦love the torque, im very comfortable with toyota tech on turbos and hybrids, the battery is under long term warrenty, and likeit was mentioned Hybrid batteries are going further then predicted, a member in family has prius, batterry still going fine, after 12 years.
When i purchase my next taco, it will be another Hybrid , however i respect other guys just not comfortable with one, its everyones option its all good, ā€œā€ Hey if your in a taco and happy thats a good thing

Dealer salespeople canā€™t help themselves. They make it sound doable over the phone, but once you are in their doors, theyā€™ll tie you up with test drives and then wear you down with the hard sell while waiting until the last possible moment to deliver you the sobering news about how much negative equity you will need to roll to ā€œupgradeā€. Keep your truck.

If they wanted me to do a deal, I would insist on a 12% discount and they would have to completely buy me out of all costs associated with my current truck, in writing. Then see if they want you to come down and waste their time.

Same here. The power of the hybrid comes on in all the right places and it makes the hybrid trucks a lot of fun to drive.

I would have probably gone with the premium hybrid if there was one available in Solar Octane with a long bed. But i'm not disappointed with the base engine's performance one bit. If I want to go faster, I have other options.

were they offering to buy out all of your original purchase costs? or was it just their normal lowball offers that they will generously allow you to roll into a new one?

The fact remains the industry average lifespan of a hybrid battery is 100k miles. So Iā€™ll pass on a hybrid u til there is no choice.

Interestingly Toyotas parts web site does not list the battery module. They do list the hybrid module for $19k. But then again the infotainment system is listed at $14k. So letā€™s hope the truck still operates after that blows.

You should drive both. The Hybrid will have more power at a trade of less storage space.

I did that and bought the non Hybrid Premium Off road. Under the rear seat has enough room for my tools, towing straps, offroad gear, and even my HAM Radio

That was my personal choice. There isnt a wrong answer, only one that you prefer more
