Anyone have a recommendation for a simple to install OBD port transmission temp reader or blue tooth + app type of thing?

Related question. I keep seeing that the Tacoma transmission temps run high (see TFL toaster test) and yet the truck doesn’t throw codes and is meant to run high. Does anyone know why that is? Does Aisin use oil that can handle it? Or is it just cost cutting / shitty transmission cooler?

My big curiosity is whether toyota is cutting corners and betting people won’t need a transmission longer than 150K miles or toyota is smart and knows what they are doing — or if the temps don’t actually get very high for most people

I think you can view transmission temp in the instrument cluster, eh?

The Care Care Nut on Youtube talked about these higher temps and he says it's because modern fluids handle them just fine.

Do you recommend any particular Carista / OBD2 version
Either works the same (no extra features or anything) the upgraded version just has wider support for other vehicles. That being said, I did buy the evo.

One thing I noticed is that my transmission is now starting the day warm - first noticed on the dash - now carista confirms it’s 100 degrees on cold start after sitting overnight .. how is this possible?

Scangauge II or III will do it. The 3 will be more plug and play. The two costs less.

That temp is way too hot in that video for any sustained use. First, if you're consistently towing 6k, you bought the wrong truck. Second, the transmission fluid is way hot and will have its life profoundly shortened by that kind of towing.

The Toyota WS ATF is nothing special. If anything, its a worse performer than a synthetic. But even the synthetic will get that hot since the oil doesn't have some magical cooling properties.
